Brandon Sanderson / Re: Roshar and the Ocean. (very minor spoilers)
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:05:13 AM »
Don't quote me on this, but I think Brandon said something about it at a signing he did Dec 2009. At the signing, he talked a lot about Roshar, and I think I recall him saying that it was simply the way the environment adapted to the Highstorms. Creatures and plants can recede to the safety of their shells til the storms pass. You see the plants doing it all through the book.

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn and LOST *SPOILERS for BOTH*
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:45:45 PM »
Has anyone else noticed how remarkably similar LOST is to the Mistborn Trilogy. In the end, at least.

In Mistborn: At the end of the first book, the Lord Ruler dies, who has been protecting the world from Ruin, who is set free, and the characters finally see the real threat.
In Lost: At the end of Season Five, Jacob is killed, and the characters realize that the smoke monster is the big threat.

In Mistborn: Vin, after absorbing the mists, basically becomes Preservation, but nearly messes everything up. And then she dies fighting Ruin.
In LOST: Jack takes over for Jacob, but nearly destroys the island after he has Desmond pull the plug thing. And then he dies from a wound made by smoke monster Locke.

In Mistborn: Sazed takes the place of both Ruin and Preservation, and does everything right cuz he knows how.
In LOST: Hurley takes over for Jack, and it is suggested that he is going to do everything right, even where Jacob couldn't (just as the Lord Ruler couldn't really do it right).

Anyhow, that's what I've got. JJ Abrams copied Brandon.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Merch and Collectable Ideas
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:55:58 PM »
I'm all about the REAL map of earth. That would be awesome.
I also like the idea of a "how-to" on drawing Aons and such.
Ooh! A do-it-yourself Koloss making kit! (just add the bodies of a few of your friends, and, BAM! Instant Koloss!)
Okay, maybe not so much on the last one.
You know, Maps are just cool, no matter what. So, although the REAL map of earth would be my top priority, I'd also be interested in larger, detailed, and even colored maps from Elantris and Mistborn.

Role-Playing Games / Re: TWG RPG

I apologize for reviving this thread after. . . . almost seven years. . . . but, uh, anybody know if this went anywhere? EUOL told me a bit about the style of RPGs he likes to make, and it sounds ridiculously cool, so I'd like to see if this idea developed into anything awesome, or if it crumbled and died a horrible death.

I'm not too familiar with WFRP, but it looks like they have similar general mechanics (how dice rolls work, etc). However, I have noticed that, beyond the basic mechanics, most of the mechanics are designed to heavily reflect the setting. I like that. It has rules for spaceships (although they have said that there was way more they couldn't fit in there, so that is almost definitely going to be an upcoming supplement), psykers and navigators, lots of cool warhammer technology, and a pretty cool system for character creation and choosing your career.
Something about Rogue Trader that sets it apart from other roleplaying games is the scope and scale of it all.

This article talks about that in depth, and I think it's pretty shweet.

Table-Top Games / Re: Warhammer Fantasy and 40k
« on: October 09, 2009, 07:53:32 AM »
Well, I finally cracked and bought myself an army of Lizardmen for Warhammer fantasy. Pretty incredibly awesome. I chose lizardmen, initially, because they have dinosaurs and they look cool. Also, they're less common in games than your run-of-the-mill elves, dwarves, orcs, undead, etc.
However, now that I've read about them and their history, I absolutely love them. Way incredibly awesome . . .+3! I'll have to post some pictures when I've got them.

Role-Playing Games / Rogue Trader
« on: October 09, 2009, 07:46:29 AM »
Ahoy. Hey just wondering if anyone here knows about or has purchased the recently released (yesterday?) Rogue Trader RPG. It's a Warhammer 40k Rpg, published by Fantasy Flight Games. I got my copy yesterday, and it looks incredibly cool. Can't wait to start playing (whenever I can get my regular group to stop flaking out).
Anyhow, just thought I'd bring it up.

Everything Else / Mountain-Con?

Anybody know if Mountain-Con is happening again this year, and if so, when? All I could find was a website talking about previous Mountain-Cons

Writing Group / Re: Inspiration
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:01:13 PM »
Most of my ideas come in two stages. The first is just the brief flash of inspiration (or whatever you'd call it). Maybe vague image in my head, or just a unique pairing of two different ideas, or whatever. Anyhow, those bits of inspiration are rarely enough on their own.
The second stage is when I deliver pizza (it's my job, and it's awesome). While delivering pizza, I'm usually deliberately thinking about my ideas, trying to create something out of those vague images or scattered ideas that I have. I guess I do that in a lot of other situations, but it's when I'm delivering pizza that the ideas seem to come together on their own. I don't know why that is, but I dig it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: I've got mine!

yeah, I just happened to be standing right there looking at other books when the guy at Barnes and Noble walks up and puts a bunch of copies of Warbreaker on the shelf. Needless to say, I suffered from a sudden case of impulse buying.

Role-Playing Games / Re: Roleplaying CCG
« on: May 29, 2009, 07:08:50 PM »
You know, I've never thought of Roleplaying while I play MtG. However, there was one time when we over-dramatically reacted to every card we played, as though we were in an episode of Yu Gi Oh. It didn't last. We annoyed ourselves too soon.

Role-Playing Games / Fireborn
« on: May 29, 2009, 07:01:34 PM »
Has anyone here ever played or even heard of the RPG Fireborn? It was published by Fantasy Flight Games back in 04 or 05. I got it around that time, but never got around to playing it til the past month. Apparently, FFG no longer supports that game, so it has joined the ranks of who knows how many other RPG's that are pretty much dead. Anyhow, It's a way fun game, where your characters are modern londoners who are reincarnations of ancient dragons. London, itself, is having a sort of magical reawakening, and your characters get to deal with all the dark forces that are returning, while periodically having "flashbacks" in which they play as their dragon form in the mythical age.
It has an fun and dynamic system, and the combat reminds me of a fighting game.
So has anyone else played it, or am I alone in the world?

I love the way the red light is reflected on the sword. Awesome. I personally thing that's your best piece yet.
