Brandon Sanderson / Re: First Interlude *Way of Kings SPOILERS*
« on: September 21, 2010, 04:35:14 AM »
I know that Brandon is thinking of writing a few standalone books in addition to the stormlight archive, so I hope we may see a sequel to either Elantris, Warbreaker or both sometime in the next ten years

Or perhaps "binding" them is what changed the Parshendi into the Parshmen.

Then what would happen if you bonded a creature mortal? (i.e. human)

Btw who is Thaidakar? At first I thought he was some random name who would become apparent in a latter book, but it seems I have missed his name a couple of times (i'm not very good with names and i haven't got around to my second reading yet). Do we know who he is, or are we only making wild guesses?
We don't really know yet.

From what Amaram said, he might be the leader of the Ghostbloods.

That's good. For a second there, I thought I had missed something crucial.

So far, the only real information on the Dawnshards that we have comes from Jasnah's notes in the epigraphs:

'Taking the Dawnshard, known to bind any creature voidish or mortal, he crawled up the steps crafted for Heralds, ten strides tall apiece, toward the grand temple above."

I'm curious as to exactly what "bind" means in this context.

Binded to the oathpact maybe?
Well, it says it can bind "voidish" creatures, which I assume means Voidbringers. And it doesn't seem to make much sense to be able to bind them into the Oathpact.

If a voidish creature can be binded in some way or form maybe we will see some bond between Kaladin and Shen?

Brandon Sanderson / Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:28:19 AM »
For years sprens have been abused, imprisoned in fabriels and overworked without pay. Recently, we have had confirmed intelligence relating to the abuse of sprens on Roshar.

Quote
The cut and type of the gem determines what kind of spren are attracted to it and can be imprisoned in it.

Action must be taken to stop the abuse of spren. This post will be devoted entirely to bringing rights for spren to Roshar.

Any theories on how spren are captured, and how they are used to function fabriels should be posted here if we are ever going to stop this. Any sightings of spren should also be posted here, along with any theories regarding the type of spren, and where they come from.

If anyone wishes to contribute ideas regarding t-shirts designs that will help spread the word about this mass abuse of rights, please post your ideas here.

However, our first mission is to choose a catchy name and slogan in order to get people interested in recruiting people to help protect the spren population.

I sincerely hope more people join me in my campaign.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Language of Dalinar's gibberish?
« on: September 20, 2010, 09:10:17 AM »
The language is the Dawnchant, the first language of Roshar (I am assuming as dawn is usually associated with beginnings). Maybe it is the language originally spoken by the shards, the language of the planet where Adonalsium was shattered. But where we have heard it before, I do not know. I've searched each word in all the books and had no luck so far any matches.

random thought- what if forced out of tranquiline halls just = forced to planet hop to escape?

edit: on further consideration, this doesn't seem to likely. but if we have seen the dawnsigners' language on another planet, there must be something more to it. Also, does Szeth have any lines in his native language? although the line from the interlude doesn't have any common words, shin = descendants of dawnsingers could explain his knowledge of lashings & the stone shamans' supposed power. also, it's interesting to note that the parshendi are super east, and the high storms come from the east, and the shin are super west. although the fact that shin were in the knights radiant does make this unlikely

See my theory concerning the Tranquiline Halls.

Lord-Ruler referred to himself as a "Splinter of Divinity", no?

The idea of Seons as splinters gaining consciousness makes me think about Nightblood -- perhaps that much breath to awaken a sword is effectively ripping a splinter off Endowment.  Temporarily damming the river where normal awakenings are more like dipping a bucket in.

Well, something is up with that sword.  It baffled Vasher why he (gender used simply for convenience) had any personality at all.  Something odd happened during its creation.  It's almost like a new creation, akin to creating a human.  Akin to creating a child.

Since God Kings apparently can create children (from Brandon via Peter, I think), maybe this is related.

I took Nightblood more to be an example of "if you put enough Breaths into something you can permanently Awaken it." With a sword (which isn't very much like a human body) it took 1,000 Breaths to Awaken; the result was Nightblood. With a dead human body (which is very much like a human body) it takes 1 Breath to Awaken; the result is a Lifeless.

This isn't a bad idea, but there are lots of things in the world that are more human than a metal sword, which should be able to be permanently awakened with less effort in this theory.  They would be awfully useful to have around too; a very practical discovery.  Brandon doesn't show us any, though.  Not only does he not show us any, but the person who comments on Nightblood's status-Vasher-is an expert on the subject of Awakening, as much as experts exist in his world.  No, I think something more is going on with Nightblood.  Something very unusual happened when that sword awoke.

Maybe Nightblood and the Returned are splinters of another shard closely related to Endowment. Endowment was obviously still alive after nightblood and returned were created (Lightsong hears the 'voice') so it can't be shattered. However, maybe endowment splintered another shard and uses the splinters to create returned (which is why there are no returned before a specific time). When Shashara created Nightblood, maybe she unknowningly stole one of the splinters from Endowment to create Nightblood.

This raises the question of whether Endownment is bad. Maybe he is the mysterious Bavadin we have heard about, who Hoid has a grudge against. Or maybe the shard he splintered was a corrupted shard allied with Rayse and it was in the best interests of humanity to splinter it.

I see spren as physical representations of emotions. As an honourspren, she is created from honour. The greater the honour, the more powerful she comes, and the more conscious of her surroundings she becomes.

I think that Szeth isn't bonded to a spren, maybe gaining his power through some sort of Fabriel instead (his power instead coming from an imprisoned spren that may lie in his oathstone - which may explain the bond between the stone and himself). That is why he can't wear a shardplate, because the gems in the shardplate conflict with the fabriel. However, with a purely made bond between spren and human has no such limit which is why windrunners were able to wear shardplates.

The question I ask is that if their powers are so vastly reduced as they travel away from Elantris (that's a fact) then what power are they using to planet-hop?
They could have just used the teleporting Aon to make a one-way trip from Sel.

I doubt this. No one wants to be lost so far away from home. They probably have a way to get back, maybe being helped by the person in charge of the 17th shard (the person Hoid's letter is addressed to?).

There's a small amount of time between letting go of a shardblade and it dematerializing, but it's long enough to cut through something as it's falling.

He cursed, yanking Gallant in a tight turn, but the tail came too quickly. It slammed into Gallant, and in a heartbeat Dalinar found himself rolling, Oathbringer tumbling from his fingers and slicing a gash in the stone ground before puffing to mist.

I guess that clears that one up. I agree with Erunion. This sort of explanation fits with how I thought Shallan's character would react.

Harakeke you are a genius. What you have done is incredible, and I think that everyone on this forum will be thanking you from the bottom of our hearts.

I agree with you, this system of writing is both beautiful and interesting. Hats off to Brandon, Isaac and anyone else who had a role in designing this language. You have done an incredible job. Something that is mysterious and exciting that will get most fans going crazy.

I think its just amazing how a fabrial works. They reproduce the bonds created between knight radiant and spren so any average person can use it. But how do the spren feel about being imprisoned? A spren is suppose to be free, to ride the winds. Will there be an attack of the spren in a latter book? Spren slaughtering humans? Spren will definitely be playing a very large role in later books, thats for sure.

I understand the emotions being tied to spren. I see spren as being a physical representation of an idea. And as we know, thoughts, ideas and memories are defined and stored in our minds as emotions. When you think back on an event, you don't so much picture the event as you picture the emotions. The stronger the emotions the better the memory of the event. Following this logic, spren would thus be physical manifestations of emotions. That's why spren are attracted to certain emotions in people.

Harakeke, when you're finished translating the second page I would love to see how you cracked this language. It looks very interesting. Maybe there is something in those pages which will better help us understand the front and back covers.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:56:25 AM »
The only scenario I can imagine where Shalan's father gives the shardblade to her is: "Take this blade, kill your brother and give it back to me." That would also give Shalan a motive and explain the broken soulcaster.

It would not explain the man in a pool of blood. While the second-shardblade-strike theory has a ring to it, it still would not work since dead people don't bleed.

My favorite theory: Father beats son senseless, Shalan stabs father with conventional weapon (or steak knife), stormblade materialises, she picks it up and drops it again. Could a dropping shardblade cause the damage to the soulcaster before vaporizing?

A man in a rage has a tendency to lose outer layers of clothing so he can beat people up. I can see a very angry man throw his coat to the ground to remove the restrictions, both mentally and physically, that are implied by said coat. (Removing a physical layer allows greater freedom of movement, the coat of a nobleman also implies restraint and control. Throwing it off just makes sense.)
Shallan's father stands up from the table in a rage, charges over and attacks Nan Balat, shattering his leg and rendering him unconcious. He turns to the table, gripping the edges for a brief moment before continuing his beating of the now-unconscious boy. Shallan grabs a steaknife and stabs her father in the back. Her father dies, slumping over the table. Shardblade materializes. In shock, Shallan bends down and picks up the blade, not really realizing what she is seeing. When her mind refocuses, she realizes what she has done, leaps back and drops the blade. The blade cuts through her father's coat, lying on the ground, and shears the soulcaster.
Deep-seated guilt and emotions prevent Shallan from telling anyone about the blade.

Fast forward a year or so, and you have the Shallan of today.

Would the shardblade demist when it hits the ground, or just when it leaves the hand. If the latter, then maybe she deliberately or accidentally struck at the coat with the shardblade, not realising the soulcaster was in it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: The Heralds *Spoilers*
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:54:10 AM »
I have a wild theory.

The Heralds entered into an oathpact which basically helps stop the voidbringers from taking over, but we have no idea what it is.

From what I have thought about, I think the oathpact basically states that the Heralds will fight the voidbringers on Roshar using a splinter from one of the shards (whether or not it is the Almighty or another shard I don't know) which is physically manifested in the dawnshard. But once the desolation is over they must go to this mysterious other place (Shadesmar possibly) and endur years of torture, in which that time the voidbringers are powerless, mindless creatures known as parshmen. But after some time the Heralds can no longer take the torture and return to Roshar, at which time the voidbringers come again, they fight, they win and return for more torture in an endless cycle.

Talenel has thus failed because he finally cracked under the torture and the voidbringers are returning for another desolation.

***

Completely separate, I think the Heralds that gave up on the Oathpact are still alive. When I read the prelude all those months ago I was under the impression that the Heralds could only be killed, not die from natural deaths, and their dawnshards are untouchable by anyone but them, just sitting there waiting for them to return and claim their blades. However I have no proof for this other than making a nice story.
