Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favourite Minor Character
« on: September 18, 2010, 12:09:41 AM »
And Wit, of course. Though again... minor character?

I didn't include Wit as a minor character mainly because he is Hoid who firstly is strictly a character of all Brandon's books (making him the most major character of all) and secondly because we just assume his awesome anyway so there is no point discussing it anyway  ;).

Syl though is definitely on the edge. I had to rule a line, and unfortunately Syl fell on the wrong side of the line. But she definitely is important. Maybe more important than Kaladin!

Brandon Sanderson / Favourite Minor Character
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:50:03 PM »
I know that we all have favourites among the main characters. I have included in this list of main characters all those who have a PoV chapter (excluding the interludes). This includes Kaladin, Dalinar, Adolin, Shallan, Szeth (he has had enough PoV chapters to be considered a main character and Wit/Hoid (assumed awesome  ;)).

Excluding the list above, who is your favourite WoK character (spren included). For me it is Axies the Collector. Anyone who gets completely drunk just to do a bit of mythbusting has my vote. Seriously though, I hope we see more of him.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: The face in the storm? *Spolier*

I think it is Jenzien as he is the stormfather. He probably holds a splinter of the Almighty which allows him to manipulate storms.

My theory is that somehow the highstorms, the face in the storms and anything else to do the storms is tied closely with the place beyond the seas were the storms come from. Notice that the highstorms always travel in the same direction and orginate from the same place (somewhere to the NE?)

Brandon has already confirmed that we have encountered splinters in Warbreaker in the form of the Returned.

That does make more sense than Nightblood being a splinter, I must admit.

I've heard the words Physical/Spiritual/Cognitive realms a lot and I'm wondering what they mean.

Obviously the physical world is the world where the books are set.

I'm not to sure what the spiritual world is. I'm assuming it has something to do with belief and the shards of Adonalsium.

BUT what the hell is the cognitive realm? I know its Shadsmar, but thats all I understand. I tried looking cognitive up in the dictionary and got totally lost. Can someone clear this up for me?

P.S. Peter (or even Brandon) if you see this I would much appreciate a little hint. I'm in Australia and can't possibly make it to any of the signings to ask the questions personally.

From the prelude, we know that the Knights Radiants existed after the Last Desolation when the Oathpact was broken. Maybe without the voidbringers, the humans started fighting among themselves, using the Knights Radiant as their army. The Knights were sick and tired of being reduced to the status of hired mercenaries for kings from being saviours of the world and decided to let the kings fight their own battles.

Notice that when Dalinar stopped claw he was showing the primary divine attribute of 1-Jes (that is protecting). He is also a leader (the secondary divine attribute). Maybe when he protected his nephew, he drew a type of spren towards him (dont know what you would call it). He was probably too busy to see the spren and apart from a select few like Rock, most people wouldn't see it. But maybe the sprens that give Knights Radient their powers cause shardplates to glow (like an aftereffect or something - can't think of the right word), and thats what Adolin was seeing, and what Dalinar saw in his visions.

I see the Dor as the raw power of Adonalsium. Adonalsium might be shattered, but that doesn't mean the power used by Adonalsium is gone. Adonalsium could have been more of a focal point for the power.

I also think that each shard is just a channel for the Dor, just like Adonalsium was a channel when he/she/it was whole. Each shard has its own rules and laws which dictate how the Dor is channeled. (Remember back in Elantris how the Elantrians used the Aons to harness the Dor, while the Jindo harnessed the Dor through some martial arts type of fighting and Dilaf harnessed it a completely different way. This just shows how different shards use the Dor differently. Raoden even comments on it in Chapter 63.)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**
« on: September 17, 2010, 08:44:31 AM »
Why even sell it. Just show up in Jah Kaved or the Shattered Plains and show off the blade and announce she looking for a husband. Highprinces and their heirs would be knocking each other over to court her.

lol I can see it right now. Shallan turning up to the Shattered Planes, trying to be courted by Highprince Sadeas. But for some reason, it just doesn't feel write. I feel that despite the book saying Shallan's 'secret' reason for leaving home was to steal the soulcaster, I feel that for Shallan, that was only an excuse. She didn't so much want to leave to help her family (though obviously this is very important) but she wanted to leave to feel adventure, to learn from books outside her home. Going to the Shattered Planes wouldn't have led to that I think, so she wasn't motivated to think up that idea.

I know this goes against what it says in the book, but thats the way I feel the character is more suited to. She probably doesn't even realise this herself.

i guess nightblood could TECHNICALLY hold a shard... but i don't know how she/it would get one

Plus, everyone would be screwed if that happened.

I don't know if nightblood itself would be a shard, but it could possibly be a splinter of a shard (though of course I have no way of knowing if the shards on the planet of Warbreaker are whole or have been splintered).

Also did anyone notice the design of the two greatshells/chasmfiends/whatever within the glyphs inside the front cover?

I assume your talking about that orange thing behind the glyphs. I didn't see it at first, but now you mention it it does look sort like a chasmfiend. I'm really angry because the uk version of WoK (which i got) doesnt have the pictures from the front and back covers.

it could be that most of the worlds were already there and each shard just went and picked one to screw around on

Possibly. That might be true for planets such as Sel or the one mistborn is set on.

The way I see it, each pair of shards have different powers. E.g. Ruin and Preservation together create life forms. Apart they cant, but together they can create life forms. But they cant create planets and inanimate objects. On the other hand cultivation and the Almighty can create planets but can't life forms. Or maybe I'm just way off the mark.

Basically I saw that in WoK they said the Almighty created Roshar and brought humans to it, and in Mistborn I saw that ruin and preservation worked together to create humans and I thought hmm...

I believe that the shard from Warbreaker (i dont remember what the name of the planet) is Endowment, while the shards from Sel (planet Elantris is set on) are Skai and Aona.

Brandon Sanderson / Theory: The Tranquiline Halls
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:08:32 AM »
We know that the Stormlight Archive is set in the cosmere, where the shards of Adonalsium exist. He know that with a shard (or at least with a combination of shards) a shardholder can create a world (like Ruin and Preservation did in mistborn). But in the WoK there is a belief that before arriving on Roshar (which was created by the Almighty) the people came from the Tranquiline Halls.

My theory is this: that whatever place existed before the shattering of Adonalsium is basically the Tranquiline Halls. We know that humans must have existed before the shattering, as those that inherited the shards are human. I have also read people's theories about how they believe that whatever world it was that Hoid and the Shardholders came from may have been destroyed by the shattering, or possibly a war between shardholders that would have inevitably followed (and i guess is still going considering Odium's actions. Considering the theology that the people were kicked out of the Tranquiline Halls by the voidbringers I am more inclined to believe that some war initiated by Odium was probably the reason for the mass exodus (and likely distruction) from the old world.

Anyway, however it happened, when the old world was destroyed, the shards separated, looking to establish their own worlds (usually in groups of two or three). Ruin and Preservation created their own humans, based on the design of the old world, while the Almighty (possibly along with cultivation) saved some humans from the old world (the Tranquiline Halls) and established on Roshar. To me this makes sense, and would be a good base to establish a whole religion around.

What are your thoughts?

I thought that the Stormfather was a Shard, and it was highly implied in my opinion that the Stormfather and the Almighty were one and the same.  It just made sense to me that Dalinar would have his visions during highstorms if this was true... because highstorms are the Stormfather's legacy on Roshar, and we know from the end that the visions are from the Almighty.

It is specifically stated by Sigzil that Stormfather was another name for Jezrien. It's in Chapter 55 (pg 768 on the UK version)

Quote
"Jenzien?" Malop said, standing and scratching his head. "Who's that?"
"You call him the Stormfather, here in Althkar," Sigzil said. "Or Jezerezeh'Elin. He was the King of Heralds. Master of storms, bringer of water and life, known for his fury and his temper, but also for his mercy."

It does sound here that Jenzien has some great power. Whether it is something connected with one of the ten essences, or a splinter of the shard of the Almighty (whatever the shard is called), I can only guess. But maybe this implies that the face seen in the high storm by Kaladin is Jenzien. In addition, the voice Kaladin hears in his dream where he is riding the high storm (it tells him that the oathpact has ended and Odium reigns) may also belong to Jenzien.

Thoughts anyone?
