Brandon Sanderson / Re: Alloy of Law Excerpt (Updated with Ch2)
« on: June 30, 2011, 04:49:43 AM »
I really like that Brandon introduces Bendalloy by using it so Wax and Wayne can have a private conversation, rather than in a fight. :)

Also, the idea of "allomantically inert" alloys and metals other than silver is new, but that would make sense as in previous novels silver is the only metal that they'd be likely to be making anything from, wheras in a more industrial era aluminium is likely to be much more common both as a metal and as an alloy.

I agree totally. This is the best part of Brandon, the fact that he can take a magic system and think of unique and sometimes even strange ways that it can be used without being used to kill armies and subjugate the masses.

I'm also happy that he had the "allomantically inert" alloys, because it sort of pissed me off that steel/iron could work on all metals. I thought that there should be some metals that can't be pushed/pulled, just like a magnet doesn't attract/reject all metals

Queens don't need to administer. The scribes and advisers do that. They run the country, make reports and ensure the queen is happy with the way they rule. The Queen has the power as she dictates the law, and can choose the advisers to run the country as she likes.

As for social grace...maybe it is because we see Elayne behind the scenes and in her head, so we get her being herself more often, rather than her outward appearance as a stately Queen, but I do agree that she does lack grace. Her stubbornness gets in the way.

She knew before she left Salidar that her mother was dead (or isn't currently ruling Caemlyn since Rand asked her to come rule Andor for him).

Ah yes, quite true. The scope of this series makes me forget when exactly stuff happened, and in what order. However considering the Dark One's touch on the world, the drought which was literally killing everyone, and the importance of the quest, I can still see why Elayne went on it. Andor was no longer in the hands of the forsaken, and she could trust Rand to be better than Rhavin. And if she did not get the bowl, her kingdom would suffer, and her ruling Andor would not change that. Once again, without anyone to trust, why not go herself. It's the best thing to do. And of course, she is still young, and probably wants a bit more adventure before calming down, but just because she is a bit selfish, does that make her a bad ruler? She would still be better than most.

How can you know that the Aes Sedai they sent isn't a Black Ajah? The only one's they know that are 100% not are more busy than they are. Combine this with Elayne believing that her country is being ruled strongly by her mother (she knows nothing of what is really happening), her strong ties of friendship (she is probably unused to having proper friends, and cherishes their presence) and her teenage rebellious nature, I'm not surprised she ran away. She's young and wants to have some fun, without thinking of the consequences. But her journey has shaped her, i think, into a better ruler.

As for her not acknowledging Rand, she's in love with him. Acknowledging him would make her feel weaker in the relationship. She is definitely the commanding one in that relationship :p

I think it would be cool if Wax used spent bullet casings from his shotgun as an anchor, or even as weapons as well, pushing on them as he uncocks the shotgun. They could still be very deadly, even if they've already been used.

It would well and truly ensnare anyone who had never read a Sanderson book, and just came across the excerpt.

The Devil with nails in their eyes? Inquisitor? Did Tan actually see one, or is he just crazy.

Marsh is still alive.

Considering that Ruin is no longer around to control Marsh, I wonder if Marsh has been sent mad from having ruin in his mind, and so many spikes in his body. Or maybe Marsh isn't that evil, but because of the spikes in his eyes, Tan just thought he was the Devil. Maybe in an attempt to divert our attention from the real villain...

I agree, having the names of our heroes as the names of the new noble houses, or cities was cool.

I'm assuming Harmony is Sazed ascended.

The Devil with nails in their eyes? Inquisitor? Did Tan actually see one, or is he just crazy.

And I love the clan of klossos bringing prosperity to the area. Have they changed from their bloodthirsty ways now that Ruin is no more?

Hey stormblessed, I saw that you mentioned being an Aussie in another thread (sorry to be off topic). I'm glad to see a fellow Australian. I feel like I've been preaching Sanderson on my own here, but hopefully you're spreading his word also.

Of course i have  ;D and i work in a bookstore, so it makes it even easier.

In my opinion, this cover looks way better than US cover. It has a strange feel to it, like we'll be expecting something new from this mistborn story.

Of course if the Knights Radiant powered their plate differently then it wouldn't interfere with their abilities... :)

Absorbing stormlight held in gemstones into themselves (like Szeth and Kaladin do) to power the shardplate and create lashings. Thats my theory at least.

Thanks a lot. My story's stalled a bit, so hopefully this will bring some inspiration.

I think that saying the words are only magical in so far as they show an acceptance to the role of being a knight radiant. The words themselves aren't what caused the change in Kaladin, it's the intent behind the words.

Just a wild theory that just jumped to mind... but what if there are no spren in the visions because they were all bound to Radiants? After the Radiants fell, their spren were all abandoned to just wander through the world, mindless and without memories, like Syl was. After a while people just got so used to seeing them around that they took them to be a natural part of life.

I vaguely recall Brandon or Peter somewhere saying that not all spren can bond with people. So therefore there should still be some spren left in the world.

You know, the scene where the Knights Radiant gave up has always seemed more than a little bit unusual to me.

In the other visions Dalinar saw, even for other parts of that same vision, things seemed "normal" until the Almighty patched in his extra message.  Humans reacted in the way humans normally react.  We didn't have the complete background, but that's OK; the feeling that it's there never really seemed to waver.  But with that vision---things seemed really, really odd.  Why didn't the Knights Radiant respond to Dalinar's questions?  Why didn't they at least say something to the people they were abandoning?  That whole scene seemed like a nightmare, not a piece of history.  Something happened with that vision, and I'm not sure what, exactly.  I don't think it's a "Odium tampered with the visions," not the same way it happened in Mistborn.  But something seems really, really off.

Quite possibly. But I don't think the whole vision was tampered with. Only the end part. The beginning feels normal enough.
