Actually they're interchangable in this instance, and willing to bet that not only are you NOT in college editing class this semester, but that I've had more experience than you.

I don't wanna start a fire fight and you are probably right but....

More inferior, as in quality, condition, or effect.
In this case it is more inferior than what?  You compared it to nothing...

More severe or unfavorable.
   Same as above

Being further from a standard; less desirable or satisfactory.
     Being furthur than what?
Being in poorer health; more ill.
I am pretty sure it isn't sick in a non metaphorical way.

hrm... community service certainly never hurts. I can see most people not getting much out of it because they refuse to take advantage of it as an opportunity. ON the other hand, the same criticism should be leveled at most High School English courses and other studies.

It's what you make of it. You have to do it, you'll get more out of it and feel better about it if you take it as an opportunity: To network by meeting new people, to grow socially, to develop new friends, and to feel like a beneficial part of the community. I thinkt hose are the things compulsory community service is trying to accomplish. I can't say I disagree with it on principle.

Gorgon, I would say that in modern American usage they are totally interchangable in the sentence I gave.  However, if the misuse of those two words is a personal pet peeve for you, then it's ok to correct me, because everyone is allowed to have 2 or 3 pet peeves about grammar/usage.  And I will acquiesce to your preference since it's not an issue I have strong feelings for.

Obviously from my sig, "you're/your" is one of my biggest pet peeves.  But the next time you use "aggravate" to mean "annoy" I'll be all over you like white on rice.

poorly grammar aggravates me

I'm still serving community service for getting an incredible amount of tardies. I've never heard of it being mandatory though.

See, I knew there were other people who cared about this topic. I like monkey dudes point as students not taking advantage of it as an oppurtunity. fuzzyoctopus also makes a good point in saying that a lot of students lie about their community service, because a lot of them do. Also, a lot of them do community things for people they know or friends who work at community organizations so the person will sign off their requirements just because they know them.

thank you for contributing, these are all very good points, and I'm actually trying to get together an arguement for or against it(whichever conclusion this thread leads me to) which I hope to present to the highschool upon finishing it. oh and as for name confusion call me whatever the hell you like preferably zeek ark or fuzzy but anything will do.

FuzzyOne, why would you prepare an argument one way or another if your views are about one thing. Wither you're trying to get comm. sevice eliminated or trying to keep it, what point would presenting an argument to the school one way or another?

well i dont know if it's good or bad, i started this thread in hopes of finding out, see student council is fighting to get rid of comm service and administration wants to keep it(i never would have guessed) but i want to know which is better so i can help one side or the other.

In that case, feel free...I'd have no problem if they somehow got rid of the requirements. That would spark a flare in some of the students who have already done massive amounts of it though. Maybe they would have to announce it and then make it active four years later so no one would have wasted hours doing a community service.

thats a really good idea, I never thought about how people would react to having their requirments stripped, it does seem kind of unfair, I'll have to re-examin my arguement, whatever it comes out to be, thank you for making me aware of this point.
