SE: It just annoys me how we, as nerds, like to make fun of other types of nerds.  Occasionally it occurs to me that we should present a unified front against the forces of normality.

Again, I didn't mean to point any fingers.  I don't think you in particular were seeking to bolster your ego.  However, I do think there's an element in all of our cosplay/larp/Klingon mockery that comes from a desire to say 'Yeah, I might be nerdy.  But at least I'm not as nerdy as that guy!"

oh, I'm not taking it personally. I just don't think we need a united front. I think art forms like comics and fantasy prose need more establishment recognition, but I dont' know if i care that they're generally popular. I have a feeling that part of why people like gaming or sf or whatever is BECAUSE it's so different from "normal" things and they like to stand out. Persecution is just a part of that (so if you think about it, I'm doing them a FAVOR by teasing them). I don't want people to think my hobbies are dangerous (spiritually, morally, psychologically, or what have you), but there's no need for the public to enjoy what I enjoy. Heaven forbid there shoudl be a cable "role playing channel" where we can watch people play D&D 24/7. That too would be extremely dorky and below my level.

And I can only stand people talking about their characters for so long.

So whenever you use united and 'a,' like "a united nation," you don't use an? This really mystifies me. Sorry for getting so off tangent, but that sort of bothers me.

So how did they come up with the word "cosplay" for that?

Because the costume is an integral part, and the costumes are often very very cool/elaborate/expensive.

You, dead MoD, may believe or disbelieve whatever you want, regardless of how foolish it may be.

Shall I give you a hint?

Ford's character's name in the movie from which the image is taken is Rick Deckard.
