Disaster Relief
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:19:27 AM »
For the new year I suggest that we set up, or put a link on our site to one of the charities that are helping out with the disaster relief efforts in the Pacific.

American Red Cross Disaster Relief
At least 65,000 people have lost their lives in East Africa and South Asia in the aftermath of the earthquake and resulting tsunamis on December 26. Thousands in Sri Lanka, India, Somalia, Sumatra, Thailand, and Indonesia are still missing; many others have lost their homes and livelihoods. Sri Lankan and Indian coastal regions were the hardest hit, with over 20,000 people killed, but Indonesia, Seychelles, Maldives, and Thailand were all affected by the tsunami waves, which reached as high as 20 feet. Aid workers and volunteers are focused on stopping the spread of disease and delivering food and drinking water to survivors. The American Red Cross reports that emergency assessment and first-aid teams were on the ground quickly and are already working with local groups to support relief efforts. Your financial donation will help provide medicine, clothing, food, and shelter for victims of the East Africa and South Asia earthquake and tsunami disaster. Thanks in advance for your participation during this critical time. The American Red Cross name is used with its permission. For more information about the American Red Cross, please call 1-800-HELP NOW or email [email protected].

Well, most of us are really poor who come to the site, but other than that why not?

Just make sure it is a real charity.

http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html

You can give $, Stock, Frequent Flier Miles, change at coinstar machines and other goodies.

Donations of money should be for the International Relief fund.

I should also note for the poor folks out there that any donation before the 1st is tax deductable for your 2004 taxes in the US anyway.

While I don't dissagree that it's a good cause, we usealy have a no link policy on the main page to anything like this.  Mostly becasue of the implied apperance of wanting moneys or donations for us provideing articles and stuff like that.

As for the Redcross statments, as long as the money stays with the Amercian Redcross then you know the money will go where it's inteneded.  However, the International Redcross (which is a different orginazation) is corrupt and gives lots of money to Hamas and other terriorst orinazations.  And 42 is right, there are lots of scams out there when things like this happen.  Several 9/11 charites were fraudelent, so I'm sure there will be scam sites out there for this as well.  FEMA has links to sites that will inform you on what charaties are valid or not if you ever need to know.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

I have no problem with it going on the main page.  This is pretty common, I think, for sites that have news blurbs.  I've seen similar links on several webcomic pages.

The decision, of course, belongs to Fell.

Fell won't be around much till next week, since he's in the process of moving.  Also, he never reads the Everything Else threads anymore.  I'll try to get a hold of him, but I think we might have to use EUOL's authority here.

Be sure to RESEARCH the Charity first.  Make sure that your donation wont mostly go to "administrative fees"
I tend to prefer faith based Charities as they tend to spend less on such costs and are more efficent than other NGOs (Catholic Charities for example)
Any way, here is a list of Charities helping this Cataclysm.
