I read something today on Drudge (which means it's probably unconfirmed) that the death toll could be as high as 400,000.

Other articles have said that the northern tip of Sumatra may have moved horizontally by as much as 120 feet.  If some of those islands had really low elevation -- 10 or 20 feet or so -- it's not a stretch to think they could have dropped below sea level.
