Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

The imperative word here is to. It seems that the Returned do not return because of something they did, but to do something.
I'm looking forward to seeing how HBO does with its adaptation of A Game of Thrones... if it goes well, it might help to serve as a model for future adaptations of novels. Online distributors like Netflix are now showing an interest in original programming along the lines of the HBO model. And where Netflix goes Hulu (and others) tend to follow, so there's good potential in the market for more of whatever succeeds for HBO.
Alcatraz 5 isn't on hold. It's not scheduled at all. Scholastic decided not to publish it. Brandon will finish the series by some other method at some later date.
Ah, well that answers why Scholastic isn’t publishing the third and fourth Alcatraz novels in paperback. Of course I could be wrong, but it appears there is something that’s gone wrong in the working relationship between Brandon and Scholastic. That’s a shame.
I am certain Brandon will find a publisher to finish the series, but it's too bad we will never see books 3 and 4 in paperback as Scholastic holds the publishing rights.

It’s not the price. As you said, it’s only a $4 difference. It’s just the aesthetics of it. I want to keep them all the same on my shelf, not paperback, paperback, hardcover. Yeah, I know, sounds picky.
Besides, it isn’t as if I am really needing it right now as I have enough to read. I just find it odd that the book isn’t in paperback yet as it’s been well over a year since it’s hardcover release and there isn’t a projected paperback release date as far as I can tell.

(The warning all my professors give us during critiques: In case I seem to be attacking you i'm not, a critique is about improvement of a piece, not about the person as a whole.)
I try not to crit much in fan-art threads (unless asked) because many of the artists are showing purely to express their love for the material, and not to get feedback on technique.
On DA or artist forums like ConceptArt or Penciljack, critique is part of the point of showing your work there. You don't want to post to CA unless you're ready to stand beside your work. But here it's a different environment.

As far as becoming an Alpha reader, it can happen, though it is a very long process.
I am a beta reader and that happened after having been reading Brandon's books, emailing him, and going to a lot of signings and such for about 5 years.
you dont count. I still hold to my theory that you know essentially what brandon is writing even before he himself does.
But yeah, getting access to that stuff is far from an overnight process. One that i have no where near the moxy to set down the path of doing, so i just content myself with hanging around here, chatting it out, and poking fun at peter when he comes around.
