So are you hard coding your own wiki?  I've heard that flex wiki (or something like that) is free, and easy to set up.

I wonder if there is some free wiki out there that you can just go and play in.  I wanted a place where I could try something.

Ah, so you created the wiki page on wikipedia, but you have not set up your own wiki...

I was confused.

I wrote a short story one time about a 'magician' who was battling an evil wizard.   The wizard was trying to cast spells on the protagonist, and he was parrying and countering with spells and actions of his own.

In the end, he decides to 'channel' and ask a wizard even greater than he.  The story then flips to a guy calling tech support.  He describes the problems he is having (which correspond to the 'spells' the evil wizard was casting) and what he was doing to try to fix it (which again correspond to his actions).   The tech support guy helps our poor and (we now realize) somewhat moronic protagonist, and he is able to defeat the evil wizard (gets his computer to reboot).

Anyway, sometimes I think those that use technology anthropomorphize the technology they use as friends and foes.   Their laptop is their sidekick, their PDA is a superhero tool...  etc. etc.

Just my random thoughts.

I know you don't know me from Adam, but if by chance you end up moving next weekend (the week I'm down there doing book signings), I'll have time in between stores.  I could help then.  I can always use a bit of exercise...

Can I take your turn HOM?  I've always liked the following puzzle, not just because it's hard, but the answer is a bit surprising.

On Halloween, four kids, Allen, Brad, Charlie, and Diane, were dividing up the treats they had collected that night.  There were 100 candy bars, and they decided that they would use the following method to divide up the spoils.

In alphabetical order, each would propose some division of the candy. If a majority of the group agrees, the candy will be divided up that way. If the majority doesn't agree, then the one who made the proposal loses his or her vote and doesn't get anything.  They are out for the rest of the rounds.

So, assuming (and this is an important assumption) if all of the kids are selfish, but adept in logic, what division Allen propose?

If you like the raft kind of riddle, then you might like this.

http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf

The instructions are in Japanese, but below are the rules.

1. Only 2 persons on the raft at a time

2. The father can not stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence

3. The mother can not stay with any of the sons without their father's presence

4. The thief (striped shirt) can not stay with any family member if the Policeman is not there

5. Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft

6. To move the people click on them.

7. To move the raft click on the pole on the opposite side of the river.

To start, click on blue circle.

It's kind of fun, but not too difficult.

Matthew Buckley / Re: Numbers

Hope you like it!  :)

It's interesting how the numbers go...  I went about 30 a week for three weeks, then jumped up to 60.  And then this week I think it's 10, as of today...

A couple of DBs have sold out, but they haven't ordered more.  A store I went to last Saturday said they had sold about 100 in the 6 weeks it had been out.

And all of that means nothing to me since I don't have anything to compare it to.  :)  I'm just glad that so far people seem to have like it.  Or at least not hated it.

Books / Giving away books!
« on: July 14, 2005, 04:34:11 PM »
What do you all think of this?

Basically the author makes this books available for free download online at the same time as the printing of his books.

I would have like to have done this with my book, but very rarely can you find a publisher willing to do this.

I particularly like this quote.

Quote
"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright #154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ours, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."

I found the place.  And it was a good thing.  I sold...  one whole book.

But then at the second signing, I sold...  another one book.

And all the new books are out now, so my book has been pushed to the back of the store.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.  :)
