Speaking of deep snow, it's deep here. Like three feet deep. It takes so much energy just to walk down the sidewalk. It just keeps coming down...

On the bright side, my class was cancelled this afternoon. Yay!

No, I was complaining that I hoped they didn't close the whole school--which would mean that I couldn't go to the library during the day and work. But the library is open. And I'm here. And my teacher can't make it in from the Berkshires (which floors me that she's commuting from the Berkshires, by the way--it's a three hour drive, I think?) so class is cancelled--which means I can go home after my 2:00 appointment instead of back to school.

ah... that makes sense. I thought class cancelled = school closed.

I wouldn't be floored by that commute. I have coworkers who drive in from West Virginia every day. And there are a number of people who work down town from out there (easily another hour).

They commute 4 hours each way each day? That makes no sense. All they'd be doing would be driving and working. My teacher only does it once a week, I think. At least, our class is only once a week.

you know what the salary and real estate differences are?

Houses on double the property that far out cost 1/3 to 1/2 of what the cost in here.

Whereas salaries in here are at least 33% higher. In other words, there's a difference of about 66% in the relative cost of living to income ratio. That huge difference in cash makes a huge difference to a lot of people. It's something I'm looking at with a 2-2.5 hour commute living in CHarlottesville. I would be able to get out of all my other debt AND buy a house at the same time.

My husband and I bought a house 70 miles from where he worked. He spent 4 hours daily commuting to work and back, but we were able to afford a house, whereas where we were living before the rent was increased to more than we could afford.

For an actual home and equity, it's worth the extra travel time.

4 hours? Thats totally insane.

9-5, 8am to 8am is standard. That means you spend as much time driving as working, and basically have to spend the rest of the time sleeping just to recover from the driving?

All reasons why I am changing Jobs and location.  Working from home with SOME Office time in Glens Falls NY will be much more sane than attempting to buy in the DC area

Oh! I just re-read your post, old one. You meant he did 2 hours there and 2 back? I thought you meant 4 there and 4 back.

2 hours each way, I did that for a while. Sucked.
