I'm from the Bay Area.  I know all about traffic.  I have no problem driving for hours to get where I'm going because I can turn my music up and sing and whatever, and because I'm in control, I guess.  But I hate to be stuck on buses forever and a day.  With people who are obnoxious.  And the fact that they're never on time.  Ick.

Mmm. Commutes. My husband used to commute four hours a day to his job and back. We bought a house, but the only houses we could afford were 70 miles from his work. Imagine having to commute to Ogden every day.

After that, we moved to Alaska. That gave us some perspective. Suddenly 400 miles to Anchorage wasn't so bad. And 100 miles each way to Fairbanks was nothing.

I got a job. Call centre stuff.

That's a two edged sword. On the one hand, income lets you buy more games. On the other hand, call center stuff sucks.

But congrats on becoming a productive member of society again.

I was thinking of posting in the "new job" thread - but this is more angsty and less "yay, new cool job."

Yeah.  So a month of NOTHING and now finally when I'm getting desperate I have to choose between two places.  One is in salt lake, is managerial again and pays about what I made at Sento.  The other is much closer, pays a lot less, but has opportunities for pay advancement, and is customer service again.

Argh.

More pay, longer commute (public transportation, this is the downtown one), and stress of managing?

Less pay, (bills are starting to catch up from unemployement), less commute and stress of customer service?

And I don't have a lot of time to decide...  Would I be an idiot to turn down the manager's job?

A commute is nothing to snear at, but you start in a better position to earn and that can make a big difference...

What are the opportunities for advancement in the management position? If it's just as much potential, I'd say to start with the one that offers higher pay.

Which one do you think you'll enjoy more, commute aside?

you know the commute could let you catch up on your learning...
If you bus you can read,... or listen to books on tape in the car... heck you can even do lessons if you order courses from the teaching co...

On the bus, given a laptop, you can write.

You can find a cheap laptop that will do wordprocessing really cheaply if you look.

Honestly, a long bus commute would make me want to take the job.

Already have a laptop.  Believe me, the commute is one of the things I'm giving *for* the job in SLC.

Problem is stacer's question - I honestly at this point have NO idea which one I would enjoy more.

On the bright side, it's better to have to choose between two jobs than to have none at all, right?

Um, did I just look at the bright side?  Jeez...don't know what's gotten into me...

OH yeah - the lower-paying customer service job?

100% medical and dental insurance premiums paid by company.

Which is sounding really good with the whole, "Man, I really want to start having kids" thing, since Lucid Raven is in no position to provide us with insurance.

I'm a creature of habit.   I don't LIKE change.  I'm fairly easy to please. I didn't mind spending 10 hours a day packing boxes once I got used to it, so as long as I pretty much enjoy my job and I'm GOOD at it, and I know what I"m doing,

I will stay at a job until
1)someone offers me a million dollars or a really amazing super cool job
2)I get fired
3) office politics/working conditions get too bad for me to emotionally bear.
