Actually, flan is supposed to be served with a light caramel sauce, or occassionally a rum sauce.

Yes, but just because it's supposed to be that way doesn't mean it's the best way.   ;D

I've never had the rum sauce version. Just heard about it. A lot. Usually from drunk people.

Which all goes back to my theory that it ought to be eaten plain.  In Paris.   ;D

No, light caramel sauce--slightly bitter, to round out the sweetness of the flan. In Barcelona.

Okay, okay.  Having never had flan in Barcelona, I concede that there it might be better with a light caramel sauce on it.

Crème brûlée beats out flan any day, in my opinion.  I've had some excellent crème brûlée at a restaurant here in Montréal.  And there are few things so good as a good crème brûlée.

For me, though, the best flan I ever had was at Mi Casa Too, in Reno.  It wasn't jello-y at all, and it had this slight hint of cinnamon that was very, very good.  They actually topped it with a little whipped cream.

Mi Casa Too is just a very good Mexican restaurant in general, though.
