King Kong
« on: November 26, 2003, 03:39:42 AM »
Universal Studios has offered Peter Jackson an incredible amount of money--and he has accepted it--to do a King Kong remake. Now that's going to be pretty dang cool.

That's... different.

I'm not so sure I'm excited by this. I mean, what exactly is the point of remaking King Kong? It just seems like a really odd choice.

I'll go just to see the guy who played Gollum play King Kong.

Hum.  I can't seem to decide if I agree with Fell or with Tage.  Like LoTR, it could be horrible, or it could be really good.  But, my inclination is to ask if the original is still good, why bother making a new one?

Because the movie industry has to have *something* to waste its time on.  Here at the TWG we should understand that.

But King Kong was only good for what it was, not what it is.  It was cool because the special effects were great for it's time, but if you look at the story, it's really just a regular old monster movie.
There have been so many King Kong wannabes in the past sixty years, that I doubt a King Kong remake would be anything special.

I agree with Mustard.

The only way they could make the movie good is if they did something like Pirates of the Caribbean. For any of you who haven't been to Disneyland in a while, the movie has scenes that mirror the scenes from the ride. I think King Kong could be good if they take a few important aspects of the old movie and compose a larger, well-written script that incorporates those few aspects at appropriate times.

You mean like the remake in the 70's?

The problem with Cong is that its been done... a lot, and spawned a whole slew of copycat movies. Remaking King Cong would be like remaking Star Wars , or Casablanca putting Ben Afleck and Leonardo Dicaprio in the staring roles and filling them with CGI and digital effects. Let the big fuzzy ape rest in peace.

Hmmmm... maybe a CGI Ben Affleck would be a lot easier to take than the real thing.....

I think that a remake of Casablanca starring BA and LC would make me swear off movies altogether. That's a serious aligation, Jeffe. Do you really think it will be that bad?

Let me give you an example...

Watch the original Sabrina

Watch the Remake

Try not to gouge your own eyes out.

Yeah, I think it will be that bad. The idea is old, almost cliche. Its giant rubber monster (or in this case CGI monster) fever. Worse still theres only so much you can do with it.  Unless that is the ape eats Fae Wray.

Actually, I like both. The original was much more a comedy, slap-stick at times. And the remake was much more focused on the romance, thus making it more "chick-flicky". Overall I thought both were good in their spheres, as long as you weren't expecting the remake to be an exact copy of the original. So I'm not sure that is the best example, but I understand what you are getting at.

I think Kong should eat BA and squish JL. (JL would probably give him indigestion).

yeah, bad example Jeffe. The newer Sabrina isn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be.

Remakes can be done well. I'm interested to see how this works out. The 1998 Godzilla was an improvement. It retained the lack of significant plot, poor acting, and so forth, but she looked REALLY cool.

Hmmm maybe I was the only one who absolutely hated it.

Well I'll come up with another one....

Yeah, I liked teh new Sabrina too. It's not as good, by any means, but it's okay. And I think I'm more excited about remakes in general than most of you, and about this one in particular. If done well (and I think Peter Jackson could probably do it pretty well) it could be really cool.
