Why, oh, why?

They don't give Firefly a chance, but they'll spit out a new Star Trek series at the drop of a hat?

(Ok, yes I know the article says it's just pie in the sky right now, but darn it, we don't need more crappy ST shows.)

Because Trekkies drop huge flippin wads of cash on lots of stupid merchandised stuff. Thats why paramount was able to drop the episode cost from 1.7 million to 800,000. Its mainly a scam to be able to put Enterprise in syndication where its expected to make millions. At least according to this weeks tv guide.

I dropped Voyager mid-way and haven't watched a single episode of Enteprise.

We trekkies are divided on the issue.

I could give you an essay length discussion of the difference between the two, Jeffe, but I won't.  Suffice it to say that Trekkers would be offended to be called trekkies, but some of us just don't care.

Dang.  I thought the idea of the B5 guy doing a ST would have gotten a better reaction.

I read an article a while ago (and I wish I could remember where so I could post a link), but it proposed that the only way to save Star Trek was to not have any Star Trek shows for at least ten years.  The market has become too saturated, and any new attempts look more like desperation than innovation.  If the franchise disappears for a while (a good long while) then it can make a triumphal return, but if they just keep churning out shows it will forever remain mediocre.

I think that Fuzzy's point illustrates this:  she's a trek fan (whether a Trekkie or a Trekker) but she hasn't even given Enterprise a second glance.  I'm the same way--I watched the pilot, but haven't gone back.  If the franchise is gone for a while, then, when it returns, all trek fans will want to give it a try.

I absolutely agree with HoM.  After watching Voyager and the last ST movie *shudder* I didn't even want to get interested in Enterprise.

Maybe if it takes him a long time to come up with the plot, characters, etc., and he can somehow make it like DS9 rather than Voyager, I'll watch it.

I watched the first season of Enterprise.

It was... tired. Amateur. Like they had seen TNG and wanted to make their own version, but had no talent.

I strongly demand another epic-scale character drama like DS9. Babylon 5 has been recommended to me.

The reason behind getting the B5 guy has to be, I assume, an attempt to replicate the drama of DS9. I wish him the best, because I'm a huge Trek fan who would love to actually like a new Trek series, but I suspect that it would be impossible.

You know what would kick freaking butt? Give the new ST series to Josh Whedon. I know he doesn't like to work on other people's intellectual property, but if you gave him so leeway, let him do whatever he wanted (like a Firefly-ish series that follows non-starfleet people), you'd really have something cool. Plus you'd combine all the Trek fans and Firefly fans and Buffy fans and Angel fans into one enormous group of rabid freaks, and we would rule the world. Or at least the nerdy part of it.

Maybe give Whedon one centering around the Maquis. Or showing why Starfleet isnt all roses and gumdrops.

I would definitely give a Whedon Star Trek a good shot.

I think one thing that might help Star Trek is taking itself less seriously.  Anyone seen Stargate SG-1?  Get someone like Jack stopping all the technobabble mid-sentence and you'd have more room for plot and character development.  Of course, that's more work for the writers, but hey, with all the reality shows going right now, you should have some extra writers somewhere to help with the workload.
