Smartest man in the US
« on: June 16, 2004, 10:48:51 PM »
...or, at least, the smartest one on TV right now.

If anyone's interested, Micah and my former roommate is on Jeopardy right now, in the process of racking up his eleventh win.

He's now the longest running, largest running, regular-seasons Jeopardy contestant.  He's the 24th highest ever grossing winner of ANY TV game show ever, including Millionaire.

He's around $376,000 so that would be very nice.

He's throwing a party at his house every day he's on.

I assume he's paying for the snacks.

Ok... EUOL's sentence was a tad confusing.

"Micah and my former roommate"

hum

Should it have been 'Micah's and my," perhaps?

Anyway, yes.  It's Kid Kilowatt's brother.  He's on every day at 7:30 MT, channel 14.

I would have said, "a former roomate of mine"  The Micah bit just confused it all, since he's not involved in any way, and I you've been roomates with Micah for a while, so I'm not sure what his placement in the sentence clarifies.

This exact discussion of grammer has occured before. Somone was described as "tage and my gamesmaster" to indicate they were the gm of Tage and the Speaker. not theat they were tage and the gm of the speaker.

I don't care about grammar in this case; EUOL's grammar was fine.  But I read that sentence five times and came to the conclusion that Micah was the one on Jeopardy because he had meant to write "Micah, my roomate".  I misunderstood it, therefore it was unclear.

It was the inclusion of Micah in the sentence that did it. How much of the board knows Micah?  If he's not the one on Jeopardy, why would EUOL mention his name and not the name of the person on the show?

Seriously, I'm not trying to turn this into a huge thread on grammar or a personal attack on EUOL's writing, but I was genuinely mislead by the sentence and am curious as to EUOL's thought process.

I figured a lot of people know Micah.  He's written a lot of articles for the TWG, though he doesn't come to the forum much.  I almost wrote Tigermoux, but he's been writing under his own name recently, I think.
