If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Self replicating robots

Cool.

But also a little disturbing:

"Although the machines we have created are still simple compared with biological self-reproduction, they demonstrate that mechanical self-reproduction is possible and not unique to biology," Hod Lipson said in a report in the science journal Nature on Wednesday.

I have mixed opinions about advancing technology. When technology claims to match/surpass mother nature, it always makes me think of what the Greeks termed as "hubris" or excessive pride (which, in their folklore, always resulted in a huge smack-down from the gods). But I also think inspiration comes from God, and that progress is important.

Which is why I said "Cool, but a little disturbing." That tends to be my reaction to things I'm not sure how to react to, like cloning. I'll probably keep this slightly indifferent, definitely wishy-washy opinion until the robots self-replicate and attack us (think I Robot) and THEN I'll say, "See, I knew they were bad!" and pretend I've been lobbying against them all along.

But by then it will be too late.  :o

...lol. I think that robots will be pretty heavily debugged and have their systems as pro-human as possible, to reduce the chance of robot meltdown :P

I defer again to I Robot.  Being programmed to serve humans didn't stop THEM. And we know that everything in movies is absolutely true.

Just like when you watch a 20 minute program on something and are now a total unfallible expert! Hurrah!

Did it teach you how to make a better TV? Or was your current set jealous of the attention you might give to a better model, and stifled your knowledge powers?!

He doesn't need to know how to make a better TV. Because TV has taught him where he can BUY a better TV.

Also,
Friendy Robotics (there is a company name out of Sci-Fi) is releasing the Scuba.  A robotic mopper.  Just set it up on your surface to be mopped and let it go.

So... we have the Robot Vacume, Robot Mop and the Robot Lawnmower.  We are farther into the future than we realize.  Think of it, our childern will never know a world without houshold robotics

No no, it's not scuba, it's Scoomba.  Similar to Roomba, the vaccuuming robot.

Scoomba and Roomba? It sounds like a strange latin dance, not a pair of robots.
