How to connect a wireless network to a land one?
« on: June 28, 2005, 09:00:37 AM »
Me and 42 were trying to connect his laptop to my desktop and they weren't able to find each other, he's on a wireless and I'm on a standard cord based one.  I've set up my a home LAN on my pc, under XP, and I can find Promethious's PC but not 42's laptop (he's done the same).

Any ideas?

What network protocols are you using? If TCP/IP, how are you handling IP assignment?

isp is via a router that just assings things normaly (ie the router decides).  I assume we're useing  TCP/IP (I know I am), though it could be a setting on the router that I haven't messed with yet that's blocking the connection.

yep, it can even access the server I've set up on our Intranet by typeing up my ISP number, we just cannot find each other's computers via window's LAN (ie shared files and folders).

that's odd. It could be a permissions issue. If you can see each other's ip address, then you're both using TCP/IP, so I don't think that's the problem.

It could be windows permissions, or perhaps a firewall. If I could sit down I'd investigate.

1) Are you all in the same workgroup?

2) Go to the command line and type C:\ipconfig /all
Make sure that the SUbnet, Gateway and DNS are the same for all PCs.
Make sure that the first 3 octets of the IP are the same as well.
Alles!!!

none of us are in the same work group and I can see the other Desktop, not being in the same workgroup has never been an issue for me with Windwos.

I'll try the second suggestion.

Okay, here's another odd one for you all.

We have a workgroup at my house.  We can all see each other, whether we're on the wireless or the land lines.

So, we strung one of the land lines down stairs and hooked up a second wireless (via a hub) thingy down there.  Only, when you log onto this one, you can't see the rest of the workgroup.  Internet is fine, but anyone using that wireless signal can't see the rest of the network

Any ideas?
