Brandon Sanderson / Shards (Elantris and WoK spoilers)
« on: September 06, 2010, 04:15:14 PM »
I'm going to reiterate what Chaos said regarding the number of Shards on Sel (planet that Elantris is set on).  Read tWoK, it changes a lot of what was previously thought.  The current theory is two Shards, with three at one point.  No specifics, just numbers.  It's not really a spoiler for either book, seeing as it's less than halfway through tWoK and not mentioned in Elantris at all.  I'm going to shut up now... :-X

*********************************tWoK spoilers****************************

I'd like to see a clarification on this.  I mean, it's pretty clear from tWoK that there would have to have been two shards on Sel at some point---Odium, and at least one other (the Dor *really* doesn't sound like Odium's magic, and anyway, Odium's visit was brief, although what "brief" means for a shard is  a good question.).  But why would there be a third?

Howard Tayler / Just got the reference on the third readthrough.
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:32:37 PM »
OK, I'm certain I'm not the most well-read Schlock person out there, but what does it say about me, that after reading today's strip for the second time, I finally connected it to this strip?

Howard Tayler / This just keeps getting better.

So all the stuff with the dreams and the squid were relevant?  And now the employer thinks he's trying to blackmail him?

Actually, I'm pretty sure Tagon is blackmailing him, or at least something like it.

What is going on?  Am I missing anything or are the rest of you in the dark as well?

Howard Tayler / So what's the deal with the guy attacking?

Or, of course, you can add any other ideas in the comments.

Howard Tayler / Ennesby really is a mercenary
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:26:41 PM »
I just wanted to comment on the fact that Ennesby certainly has his priorities straight!

Anyway, how does Howard successfully keep pulling off the same joke, and I still laugh?  It's been years!

Howard Tayler / O Fortuna

Why I love this strip.  I just had to go look up 'O fortuna' to really get the ambiance.  And it was totally worth it.  Ennesby rocks.

Howard Tayler / Kevyn's paranoia
« on: September 22, 2009, 03:56:26 AM »
Kevyn's paranoia is getting played up pretty thoroughly at the moment.  I don't think we've seen any evidence that Lota is going to do anything wrong at any point, and Howard seems to be hammering this home pretty heavily.  So is the conflict on Credomar going to be driven by Kevyn's paranoia, or is this just flavor to whatever else goes wrong?

Howard Tayler / Serendipity

Why do I have the feeling Schlock just blew this whole case wide open?

Time to theorize.  Are the toughs being set up as the fall guys by the police department?  What's really going on?

Howard Tayler / It's just beginning
« on: May 21, 2009, 05:11:31 PM »
OK, I'm starting to get the feel of this.

All the other amorphs have been to the circus.  So now Schlock is in even worse shape than he was before.

Perhaps he should go to the circus and pretend to be himself.  After all, nobody is going to believe him.  And, of course, it would make his act even more obviously fake.  Perfect!

Howard Tayler / Schlock: "Undercover? What's that?"
« on: May 04, 2009, 04:40:20 PM »
So why can Schlock manage to hide and spy on his own company, but can't seem to manage it anywhere else?

He seems so incompetent, but sometimes has thinks quite strategically.

Maybe he's just ADD.

Howard Tayler / Schlock eavesdropping?
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:29:45 PM »
I just read http://www.schlockmercenary.com/d/20090315.html.

I seems that Schlock is eavesdropping on the conversation.  This is made pretty obvious.  The question is, why?  Normally this doesn't seem like the kind of thing he'd be interested in.  Has he picked up something I haven't?

Any ideas?

Howard Tayler / "A Fire upon the Deep"
« on: February 24, 2009, 06:52:06 PM »
This post is a question for Howard:

Have you read "A Fire upon the Deep"?  I think it relates to some of the things you've put in Schlock Mercenary, including some of the plotting difficulties the fleetmind's resources have caused, and was wondering if you knew the terminology well enough to have a discussion about them.  This was especially triggered by Lota's recent actions in the strip.

Howard Tayler / RIP Brad
« on: February 18, 2009, 05:20:22 PM »

I just wanted to add a thread here to say goodbye to Brad.  He's been with the strip since the beginning (yeah, that's him in the strip above.  He's had a couple of changes over the years), and is one of the few major(?) characters to have survived this long.  I know he's been phased out more and more over the years, but after my marathon sessions of reading through the archives about two years ago, I can't help but feel sad now.

Rest in Peace.

Howard Tayler / Lota is using puny pronouns?
« on: February 03, 2009, 07:09:19 PM »
I brought this up in the "Lota is Omni" thread, but I just wanted to ask why Lota has changed to using the puny personal pronoun "I".  I looked back through the archives (wow, this is an amazing sequence to read all at once.  How do you keep it up, Howard?  It's as good as any story I've seen in the archives.) and it seems to happen with no warning.  Is this significant, or it Lota's particular brand of self-reference just very hard to maintain?

Howard Tayler / How long *would* it take Credomar's air to leave?
« on: January 27, 2009, 07:44:18 PM »
It's been ages since I took statistical mechanics.  I vaguely remember solving a problem like this (I think it was a bucket full of water emptying, but they're related), but I don't remember any details.

Does anyone have any ideas?  The total pressure is probably going to decrease exponentially, as will most of the other properties, but I haven't a guess as to order's of magnitude.
