Movies and TV / Re: Firefly anyone?
« on: July 13, 2011, 02:22:10 PM »
just watched it because they talked in writing excuses so often about this series. and they were right - itīs really good dialog.
loved the scene "psychic? thatīs sounds like science fiction!" - "honey we are in a spaceship! XD
itīs a good story and nice idea for a tv series (sci-fi+western) . sad, that it didnīt work.
they could have done better in many things. for example the title sequence is awful and makes it cheesy and i didnīt like the cast much.
but the production design is done wonderful! and the costume design itīs bad at all too.

Movies and TV / Re: The New Season of Torchwood
« on: July 13, 2011, 02:03:30 PM »
watched yesterday the new episode.
i think torchwood is a nice idea, but a had the feeling they didnīt put much love into it. not like doctor who. i actual liked the new episode. itīs kind of a zombie apocalypse. iīm a bit sad that itīs not playing in cardiff. because of that it looks like a low budged us-series.
hm iīm not sure ... i will watch it, of course (miss doctor who ;-)   ). season 1 and 2 were more like british military buffy with aliens and with a new topic every episode hm...
but nevertheless - l love zombie apocalypse XD !
iīm wondering how the story will end - jack canīt be normal again because he will be the face of boe.

hey, iīm interested in where do you find your inspiration? whatīs your main source?
do you just jump  randomly through the internet, or read the newspaper, watch movies - where do you go for inspiration?
are you more inspired by pictures ,texts or music?

i often randomly look at old paintings or skim through work of photographers. i like to imagine that one of my characters is walking through a landscape of a photo or i make up a background story for a person in a picture.
and fashion history but thats because i partly study this ;-) .
poems can be great but to my shame i donīt read many. museums a great too (i should go more often), especially those for natural/technology history.

i just enjoy listening to the 4th book of the alexia tarabotti series by gail carriger .
i think the creation of alexia the preternatural was a great idea! + she was able to give her vampires and werewolves her own note.

thank you so much. you helped me a lot!
in germany i think the agencies donīt have this significance, but the market is changing now. sadly we still donīt have many published good sci-fi and fantasy books (well a few but not like in uk, usa and canada). of course this can be a chance too.
cornelia funke translated her work and sent it to the UK and now is famous world wide.

i like īwriting excusesī - itīs a really helpful pod-cast and thanks for the other link.
do you think one should go to cons? another example thats new for me because we have here two big book fairs and i donīt think, that you can find there an editor.
well, iīm a newbie generally in the writing-world ;-) .

i donīt think much of e-publishing too. i want to do this job seriously and make money. and i know itīs hard  but my other future profession is freelance and mostly low budget. so iīm used to having patience .
i think too, if you donīt write/illustrate for your self, you can never be a writer/illustrator. you have to love it and you have to be a bit crazy to choose such a profession ;-) .

so thanks again for your help and good luck to you too.

ah thank you. thatīs really good to know.
the whole principle with agencies is relatively new for me. i thought that you most often send directly your stuff to the editorial office of a publishing house. guess in uk and the usa you have more often a agency between you and the publisher.
thanks for your help ;-)

Reading Excuses / Re: Your Background
« on: July 09, 2011, 07:15:32 PM »
hallo,
iīm a newbie in this forum and in writing generally .
donīt know if you have to start writing as a child to become an author. many authors have always written.
i didnīt and iīm just learning.
i come from a more visual field and always have drawn my stories . i study costume design and would like to earn my living as an illustrator. but at both of these jobs you are working with other peoples stories . this can be much fun if you work with the right people. but i would like to tell my own stories. so - here i am , trying to learn all about writing.

hm is there something else to tell? well iīm a big reader (ok more a audiobook listener) like everyone here i guess. i read in all genres but i think in my own work i will always be a sci-fi/fantasy/horror geek ;-) . i would like to write children-picture-books or books for young adults (and of course publish those).
at the moment itīs the end of the semester, there is much to do and iīm illustrating a story of a friend . iīm still in the research-stage for my own story and hope i will start to write in the semester holidays. i would like to write in english, what is not my mother tongue, because i just want to get better in english, most of the books i read  are in english - so i have in writing more the rhythm of the english language and i would like to move to the uk, usa or canada ... or sweden (but iīm awfully bad in learning new languages XD )

oh and partly why iīm here - do you know this situation? :
i just meet with friends in the university or with my parents and i begin to say
"i just read a new book..." and everyone goes īnot againī .
and when i get to  "... itīs so well written and i didnīt see the end coming and how the author uses here and here the words - this is genies"..." they are only half listening.
and when i then begin with "oh and then i listen to this sci-fi book but itīs really not sci-fi how you think it is" - then i lost them.
so itīs nice to find a forum like this ;-) !

so, thats my life (and wishes) in short ;-) - hello everyone

stupid question i guess but iīm not sure about this:

can you send your manuscript to a publisher in a other country or do you have to publish in your own?

hey i donīt know if anyone here is in the film business or is studying in this area .
i just want to talk a bit about the place of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and all to those belonging sub-genres in this  industry.

i donīt know how it is in the UK or in the USA, but in my experience those genres are still the black sheep who get sneered on.
they all want to make "serious" films.
and donīt we all know that sci-fi and fantasy is stupid and doesn't belong to good movies or literature ;-)  and oh games are dangerous for children ?!
ok not everyone thinks so but nevertheless itīs a main opinion. may be because of the professors who are teaching those classes on the universities - i donīt know.

are there places, forums, cons, where young writers, - illustrators, - filmmakers , who love those genres... encounter each other?
wouldn't the world than be a happier place ;-) ? well my world would!

guess this topic is more a wish-topic

if you could, for which film oder tv-series would you want to work for? i wish i could work for doctor who.

(sorry for my wobbly english!)

« on: July 09, 2011, 05:42:21 PM »
i didnīt attend one yet but i plan to ;-)

the first two which come to my mind are
the sci-fi con in london http://www.sci-fi-london.com/ and
the leipziger buchmesse in germany http://www.leipziger-messe.de/LeMMon/buch_web_eng.nsf  (a book fair for all kinds of genre and itīs international)

or the one in frankfurt but i donīt know much about this one http://www.buchmesse.de/en/fbf/

how would you approach this?  go to the publishing houses booth? has anyone experience with this?
