Brandon Sanderson / Alcatraz Versus The Knights Of Crystallia
« on: March 02, 2011, 03:40:48 PM »
It’s good to be back again. The forum was down whenever I tried visiting in the past, but it looks like it has been up for awhile now. It is good to see up and going again.

But to the topic of my post,  I have read the first two Alcatraz books, and although on the light side because of what ages they are aimed at, they are good reads. However, I would like to purchase the third book, Alcatraz Versus The Knights Of Crystallia, in paperback. But for whatever reason, it is still not available even though the hardcover was released in December 2009.

Does anyone know or heard from Brandon on what the hold up is? I would like to purchase the third book and continue with the series, but really would like to do so in paperback.

Brandon Sanderson / Chicago signing
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:25:12 AM »
Well, just got back from the signing in Chicago. It was pretty standard from his TGS signing, but the store couldn't make up their minds if they wanted to use the writsband method or not (the color wristband determines what group you are in for the order of your signing). A couple days ago first it was they were using the wristband, but when showing up this morning, they said it was first come first serve. Then at the signing, it was the wristband again.

But either way, it didn't affect the signing all too much. I think there was actually a larger turn out for Way of Kings than for The Gathering Storm, which I did not expect. Way to go Brandon!

Afterwards, a few of us did go back to Brandon's hotel and play a couple of magic games, myself included. That was the absolute best part of the night, to be honest. Being able to play and just sit and talk with him on a casual basis. So awesome.  :)

Here are some pics from the evening. Nothing too spectacular, not the greatest photographer (especially noted by that second picture.)

This was during his Q&A.

Ugh, this was a horrible pic of him while reading.

Ok, here is a much better picture of him reading. Although at this time he was replying to a remark made by someone.

And here is one of the magic games we played with Brandon back in the lobby of his hotel. We were there about two hours. I was the first to die in the first game, so I snapped a picture. Brandon actually pretty much stomped all over us both games. If you don't know already, Brandon is a very good Magic player.

I hadn't played Magic in about 2 years, but I didn't care I really didn't do much. Just the experience of sitting, talking and playing a couple games with him was the best.    :)

Thanks Brandon!

Brandon Sanderson / Finished Elantris - Questions **MAJOR SPOILERS**
« on: September 03, 2010, 01:46:37 PM »
Once again, MAJOR SPOILERS below. Stop now if you have not read Elantris.

Well, last night I finally finished Elantris. And I will say I really enjoyed it. However, I do have some questions.

The solution. Raoden draws the chasm line with the stick in the dirt (from the pool near Elantris down to Kae) to complete the picture so the AonDor is completely open and accessible. Correct?

My question is, isn’t that a bit of redundancy? I mean wasn’t the AonDor cut off originally because of the chasm? Why would Raoden need to draw something that already had happened (the chasm forming)? I am probably missing something, but why I am throwing this question here.

Second question. As Brandon even says in his annotations section, Elantris is the source of the AonDor. But I had thought the Elantrians (however many years back it may have been) created Elantris and doing so in using the AonDor. If Elantris ‘powers’ the AonDor, how could the city have been built in the first place?

Third question, closure. I may have missed it, but what happened with some of the other ‘new’ Elantrians?  Taan? Can’t remember his name, but the one who did all the cleaning. I remember reading that they were ‘dead’ when the monks attacked, but as we know, it’s very hard for Elantrians truly to die. So were they brought back when Raoden completed the restoration of the AonDor? Or did they true die? And if that is the case, I would think they earned a spot for their own funeral, as Saolin and Katara had earned.

And just to clarify, not bringing all these questions up in being critical of the book, I did truly enjoy it, but was left with these questions that I had to ask.  Lol

Now I am going to take a bit of a break and move onto the first Alcatraz book. Should take me a night, two at the most.    :)

Brandon Sanderson / Quality of Wok book
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:47:57 AM »
For those of you who have picked it up your WoK book, what have you all found the quality like?

The reason I ask is I went to Borders today, just to take a look at the book, to see how 'big' it is (and it's huge  :) ). The inside pictures were great and loved the cover. But what bothered me was the 'waviness' of the pages. Not sure if that makes sense, but if you were to look at the book from the top down, looking at all of the pages, you will see waves in them, instead of it being straight (like it's supposed to).

What an employee said at Borders was it was due to the book was so thick, that can sometimes happen. But I am hoping it was more due to the shipment the store received as I want my pages straight.  :)  Sorry, but I am picky on my hardcovers, especially one I am going to have signed by the author.

I am hoping the book I get at the signing next week will actually have straight pages, and not the 'waves'.

Brandon Sanderson / Elantris - *Some spoilers*
« on: August 16, 2010, 01:33:31 PM »
About a month and a half ago, I started a thread asking everyone's opinion on which of Brandon's books should I start first, once I had finished another series I was working on.

Well, I finally finished up the series and decided to go with Brandon's first book, Elantris. I am only about 150 pages in, but I will say I am enjoying it, and is an easy read. Now to clarify, I don't mean 'easy' read as in simple. But easy as quick to get into, a fun read, and therefore stay interested.

I have found one of two things can happen with myself when  starting a book. I either find myself rereading several passages because I am saying "Wait, what they say again?" or "This is starting to drag a bit." and find I am forcing myself to continue reading, telling myself "Ok, I know this will improve if I just keep reading."

Or, I will begin a book and it will just 'flow', everything makes sense and becomes very 'easy' to read. It is where I am telling myself, "Ok, after this chapter I am done." However, when I finish, I look how many pages are for the next chapter and tell myself "Oh, this is only 10 more pages, I will read one more."

I have found Elantris to be the latter. I was hooked as soon as I started the Prologue. I had gone into Elantris, not knowing anything about the book, not even reading the back of it (which is an oddity for me). The description of the city of Elantris had me enthralled and was looking forward to the story dealing with this utopian of a city. And then the final line of "Eternity ended 10 years ago." I was immediately intrigued.

I will say, there have been a couple of things that have annoyed me, but they are small overall. But there have been a couple of times Brandon has introduced a word, a word for his world that has a different meaning, and really did not describe what it meant.

The two I can think of right now is ‘sule’ and ‘kolo’.  I think I finally was able to figure out ‘sule’ is a substitution for what I believe is ‘friend.’ But I’m not sure what ‘kolo’ is?  Does it just mean ‘ok’? It would have been nice if Brandon had put in (after using the words for the first time), some kind of indication what they meant. Or if he did, I just missed it.

But again, this complaint is minor, and as I said, I am enjoying the book a great deal.

Brandon Sanderson / Which book should I read first?
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:43:50 PM »
I will admit, I have not had the pleasure to read Brandon’s books as of yet (I know, shame on me) but I am in the process of finishing a series before I head off to GenCon.

However, I do plan to start up Brandon’s books afterwards. Now, which book/series do you recommend I start first? I was thinking of going with Mistborn as that series is completed (well, at least I think it is), but would it be better to go with Elantris or Warbreaker first?

I guess I just want to avoid the “Oh, that’s a good series, but I would have started with ________, first.”

What do you suggest?

Brandon Sanderson / Way of Kings signings
« on: June 23, 2010, 06:08:29 PM »
Is there any kind of book signing party scheduled for Way of Kings at BYU? If so, can I assume it would be for release night (August 31)? Or has there even been a book signing tour been scheduled yet (if there will be one)?

Brandon Sanderson / Tour dates and places for Towers of Midnight?
« on: May 28, 2010, 12:50:12 PM »
I know it's still only May (well, just shy of June), but has there been any information on Brandon's book tour for Towers of Midnight?  I assume he is going to have one.
