I know there's no database. But there IS a fixed format for how the posts and information is stored, and a simple script could parse through them and add them to a database automatically. I *know* that it can be done because they did it for the upgrade from Gold to SE already. I'm willing to bet that even if an official one doesn't come out right away, that if we're patient someone makes one and we can upgrade instead of doing a new install.

I know all that.  It still requires Tage to dump the DB then set up the script, wich requires him to do all that work for something he dosen't care much about.

this is how I have felt about a lot of the posts lately on the forum.

lol, it's funny cuz it's true. As a digression, I think what's great about PA is the details. In this strip, for example, the "#1 Mom" mug and the Cthulu pajamas.

Anyway, I think we should just wait till someone comes up with a YaBB Gold to Simple Machines upgrade script. It'll come eventually, and I don't think even Tage would object to running a tested script he didn't have to write if he's doing a whole forum upgrade anyway. (would you tage?)

Personally I'd rather have a nice forum wipe anyway. Running an upgrade script isn't hard, though.

The hard thing, which I haven't mentioned up to this point, is that the TWG logins are tied to the YaBB logins. Switching to a PHP/MySQL version would also require that I rewrite the authentication system. Not incredibly difficult, perhaps, just annoying.

well, it's kind of a hypothetical discussion as it is right now. I personally would NOT care for a forum wipe. Too much history. However, the login for the site I can see issues with. But who's talking about actually doing this in a determinate time frame? I'm sure it'll happen, but do we need it now? The only thing I can think of that I want changed are the functionality of the PMs and an ignore feature, both of which might already have mods available for the Gold version.

HEre's one for advanced IM
I don't see one for ignoring users. Oh well.

If we did move, I could manually transfer the post-count numbers from all the regulars.  Again, I'd still like to stay (simply because moving would mean more work for me...) but I'm not going to throw a fit if we go to something new.  These things happen.
