If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

It's official.  Kerry just conceded Ohio.  Bush wins!

uhm... when a candidate "concedes" do they officially step out of the race? Or do they just admit that they were beaten? Because I think an actual voter count would trump a candidate saying he lost. Y'know, legally.

All of which is moot when it becomes so close to statistically impossibility that the candidate will win.

so, four more years. For good or ill.

For the record, I'm disappointed that my candidate not only didn't win, but didn't show up in any of the numbers displayed in the media.

Well, yes.  If there's some crazy statistical miracle, and all of those provisional ballots go for Kerry, then hye could still become president.

Here's my guess: Kerry is still a senator, so unlike Gore, he still has a political career to think about.  I think he's trying to come out of this as clean as possible, rather than lose kicking and screaming like Gore did.

Oh I'm sure Gore could still win an election for county supervisor or something.

Actually, before the Democratic primaries started for this election cycle, Gore was named as the one person that the other candidates were watching to see if he would run. The pundits at least, if no one else, found him still a viable candidate for a presidential race.

Whether he could win or not is another matter, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Not really -- I don't think anyone seriously thought he was viable.  The pundits were watching to see if he would run, but I don't think any analysts imagined he would ever win primaries or get the Democratic nomination.

Personally, I think there should be a law that candidates that lose presidential elections ought to be exiled to Paraguay.  Think of how better off we'd be if Bob Dole, Jimmy Carter, and Al Gore got deported.  For that matter, Nixon would have gotten the boot before he ever got elected.

that last one was the clincher. Where do I sign a petition for this law?

I don't think Paraguay would agree to this.  Maybe we ought to designate an island somewhere.  In the Aleutians maybe.  Call it the Island of Misfit Politicians.

Aren't the Aleutians US property though? That means they could still vote. How about we just launch them at the moon.

Where did our draft of the law ever give Paraguay a choice in the matter?

Excellent point, Prometheus.  I'm sure they owe us a favor or two -- after all, we never invaded them, and we totally could have.
