Okay, yes, I believe it has something to do with the brian going into "submission" and starting to dream, then getting a rush of oxygen and livening up, unable to tell the difference between your dream and the world for a second.  And wow, I have a solution small, fuzzy,m roddentlike creature; DON'T EAT FUDGESICLES WHEN YOU PLAN ON SLEEPING!
