Who has read The Way of Kings (minor spoilers)
« on: October 07, 2010, 01:44:22 PM »
Obviously:
  • Gavilar
  • Dalinar
  • Navani and several women from Dalinar's and Sadeas' war camps

Not so obvious:
  • SHALLAN
    Quote
"I have read the complete works of Tormas, Nashan, Niali the Just, and -- of course --Nohadon."

  • Jasnah

Nice pick up there on Shallan. I think Jasnah is quite obvious, she did find the quote in the first place.

Strictly speaking Dalinar and Gavilar didn't read it, they heard it being narrated.  :P

Adolin and - I assume - Renarin have also heard extracts from it, and possibly have heard the whole thing once (though maybe not in order).

Sadeas possibly. He at least has heard extracts.

I'm sure Hoid has read it.

I did! ...Oh wait.

I agree with Stormblessed. It was a nice catch on Shallan. I'm pretty sure Adolin and Renarin have both heard it once (I thought I remembered reading that anyway). Sadeas might have heard it, if only to see what Gavilar was so obsessed with, and surely he looked it up after Dalinar started hearing it faithfully.

I'm sure just about everyone has heard extracts. It's probably somewhat like the bible, where everyone knows a few phrases or "verses". Most people seem to know it supposedly puts darkeyes above lighteyes, so I'd assume everyone has at least heard a few out-of-context sentences. Everyone learned, at least.

Gavilar was learning to read, wasn't he?

I don't think so.  When Szeth wrote Gavilar's last words next to him everyone assumed that Gavilar had done it himself.  This led people to think he could read and write.  Even though he probably couldn't.
When to live is to die, and to die is to live, does either really matter?

I thought there had been some other mention of Gavilar learning to read passages from the book on his own, from Dalinar or Navani. Could be wrong, though.

I never got the impression he was fluently literate, just that he had begun learning.

No that passage was in relation to the script found when Gavilar died, written by Szeth, just as Fireborn said.

Although this does reveal something interesting about the Shin.  Either they have a fairly egalitarian society, or Szeth was high-ranking before becoming truthless.  Based on the interlude chapter, egalitarian seems most likely, meaning most from that country would be able to learn reading and writing.

Yes I think Shin culture is interesting. Vorin culture sees writing as womanly. Shin culture obviously doesn't have the same prejudices, but maybe they still have them, such as maybe only farmers can write or maybe stone shamans etc., which raises the question of what Shin was before becoming truthless. Also, his ability to learn to write may have been taught to him after leaving Shin.

Here's what we've got on Adolin:
P. 331
Quote
"Have I told you the story of the king carrying the boulder?"
"Yes." Adolin said.
"I have?"
"Twice. And you made me listen to the passage being read another time."
"Oh. Well, in the same section..."

So we know he's heard parts of it, but he hasn't read it all as of yet.

I'm pretty sure Szeth's dad is someone fairly important. After all, he freaks out when the person calls him Szeth-son-whoever. He says that he doesn't want to disrespect his father's name and would perfer to be called Szeth-son-son-Vallano.

Considering Dalinar's interest in the book, I'm sure that Adolin has heard nearly all of it, though probably not in the right order.

Well the fact that he's now sharing a new story in the same section makes me think that Dalinar only shares stories that have really stuck out to him.

Maybe, but he gets Adolin to sit with him while passages are being recited, so I'm sure Adolin has heard some of the lesser passages as well, and Dalinar does know all the passages off by heart.

Wow the first post was entirely confusing and it took me like 2-3 minutes to figure out the "who has read the way of kings" was referring to in the book. lol.

That is a good catch, I hadn't seen that. o.e  I think her having read The Way of Kings will probably strongly come into play when she interacts with Dalinar.  I look forward to their encounter.
