2008 Oscar Predictions
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:49:05 PM »
It was recently brought to my attention that the Oscars are this Sunday, which means that it's high time for our annual Oscar Predictions contest. For those of you who are new, here's how it works: I post this list, you all post your predictions as responses in the same thread, and we cut off the responses Saturday night. Whoever picks the most winners correctly wins the praise of everyone, everywhere in the world, as represented by a little icon you can stick next to your forum profile. I won last year, and I intend to win again this year, even if I have to murder you all to do it. The gauntlet has been thrown.

Some quick notes:
1) Each year I do the 6 big ones, the two writing ones, and two that I think will be interesting categories. This year those categories are Art Direction and Cinematography.
2) Yes, the Oscars are basically just a commercial industry patting itself on the back. We know. That doesn't mean they're not fun to predict, Mr. Elitist.

This sounds like fun... I'm always really bad at this stuff though, because I have a hard time separating who I want to win, and who I think will actually win. But here goes:

Best Actress: Marion Cotillard

Best Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck

Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett

Art Direction: Atonement

I never do this kind of thing, mostly because the only movies I've seen in that entire list are Juno and Ratatouille.  However, I got invited to an Oscar party where I'm expected to make predictions, so I may as well do it now.  Here goes nothin':

Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
Best Director: No Country for Old Men
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There
Best Art Direction:  There Will Be Blood
Best Cinematography: Atonement
Best Adapted Screenplay: No Country for Old Men
Best Original Screenplay: Juno

Dear Parker: I need your crap about as much as I need your substandard predictions. Love, Fell.

Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
Best Director: No Country for Old Men
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Best Actress: Ellen Page, Juno
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, I’m Not There
Best Art Direction: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Best Cinematography: No Country for Old Men
Best Adapted Screenplay: No Country for Old Men
Best Original Screenplay: Juno

The only one I'm not sure of is actress, but I'm picking Ellen Page because Parker didn't.

See?!? Proof of the conspiracy! And if my predictions are so sub-standard, why is it you're agreeing with 70% of them? I think that's the very definition of what I said you'd do. Down with frogs! Long live groundhogs!

Fell only had seven. So I didn't win, but neither did he.

Take that, Fell!

And nice picks, Sprig. I thought you were nuts going with Swinton--shows what I know.

Nicely done, Sprig. Feel free to give yourself a 2008 Oscar icon.

And I can't believe I tied with Parker. I'll never live this down.
