Where to Submit?
« on: July 07, 2004, 11:30:04 PM »
Well....
I did all this editing, and now i realize... I dont' know where I want to send this story.

I'm pretty sure I want to start with teh SFWA qualifying venues. But apparently I'm goign to have to get nicer paper.

Anyway, just kind of a rant. Research for guidelines is kind of a pain. and I'm going to have to put soem time into that.

Does anyone have any recommendatiosn for where to submit?

Uh...what's the story?  Because I'd recommend WOTF first.  Winning it, or even being a finalist, is an excellent credit.  It won't get you into SFWA, but it will look better on cover letters than even a major magazine publication will.  Plus, the contest has a faster turn-around time than most magazines.

I've already sent one to WotF. I can't submit to them again till next quarter. Being in their anthology, though, DOES count toward SFWA (I saw that this morning). This other one is a short fantasy, about 2k words, depending on how you count. A number of these places have a very rapid turn around, I'm noticing. Some as short as a month, which astounds me. I made a chart of all the ones I think will work, and I'm narrowing it down to the best. Very short fantasy, for example, is probably not the best for Absolute Magnitude which is looking for action oriented SF. There's a few others. I'm naive still, so I'm going to set my sights high at first, go for stuff like Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Always start from the top and work down.

I suppose you just got the list off of SFWA's site?

yeah, and then I spent lunch hitting all their web sites and compiling the submission guidelines for anyone accepting unsolicited stuff.
