Lefty
« on: March 16, 2006, 08:30:38 PM »
So I'm nearing the end of a poetry unit here at school and our final project is to make a portofolio of our ten best poems, so I'm trying to decide if this one should go, tell me what you think, as well as what you think it's about, if you would be so kind.

Lefty, by Max Raden

Have you ever seen the moon in someone else's eye's?
It's beautiful and unbearable but seems to stay only the night.
It happens so fast but lasts forever.
It's terrifying and surreal in a soothing sort of way.

The rush
The thrill
The contradictory screams and inappropriate laughter
A celestial balancing act begetting a secret known to those who have known
A white feather, a red horn, a halo and a pointed tail,
Tonight they share the same body.

All that is, was, and will be
Culminating in this commonly occurring rarity of life.

You don't want to fall asleep,
You can't fall asleep.

Who knows what will happen to the moon.
If you aren't awake to stand guard
The sun might chase it away.

You must stay awake
To preserve the light
To save the terror.
You must stay awake

It's not even full
And the stars have yet to dim...
You can't fall asleep..
But you do.
Night becomes more silent than ever before
All is lost...

But is it really?
When the moon is in somebody's eyes and not the sky...
It will still be there in the morning
Tappin my feet the the beat of original sin.

I'd say either lose the first stanza or rework it a bit. The third stanza is a bit abstract in the language used.

From the 4th stanza down you've really got something. You should try to rewrite the first three to tie in more with this theme of staying awake and the sun and moon.

Well done otherwise. I do hope you keep with this poetry writing thing. That's one thing we could use more of around here.

well it's as I thought... the progression doesn't work unless the reader knows what it's about... see it's like a little story, and the first three stanza's are a thing thats happening and the rest is the reaction to said event and the last stanza is the aftermath
oh and thanks, I may just out a few more up later.

Although I usually like poetry to rhyme, at least partially, I have to say that it is a very evocative poem, T.F.O. All in all, good work.

you know I used to hate poetry that didn't ryhme, but as I got older I started to develop a taste for the free form prose as it alowed me more freedom to express my eratic and capricious emotions. And thank you, it was written to evoke a response.

Complete opposite right here. Because now that I have a more grandiose vocabulary than I did as a child, rhymes are a lot more fun.
