Question for Stacer
« on: June 02, 2006, 01:50:43 PM »
Hey--Rick Walton just posted your "call for books" onto the utahchildrenswriters group.  (I'm not sure where he got it from initially.)  Anyway--I've got two different YA fantasy manuscripts that I literally have in envelopes and am about to send off to different publishing houses.  I looked on Mirrorstone's website, and I just had a couple questions, if you wouldn't mind me asking.  Do you accept simultaneous submissions?  It seems like you don't, judging by the legal document I'd have to sign to submit.  If I sent one of them on to Mirrorstone, should I address it to you, or just to submissions in general?  I honestly hadn't even considered Mirrorstone, since I somehow had it in my head that you only did series books that take place in your worlds.  Is your contract for other books industry standard (ie advance/royalties/etc.)?  Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for any advice you might have.

The reason why I sent that email to Rick (he got that firsthand from me--I took his class at BYU) was because we've changed our submission guidelines so that we're no longer doing just shared-world anymore, so that's why you had that in your head about us. Previously, we were only doing shared-world within Dragonlance: The New Adventures, etc. but now we're able to look at stand-alones.

The legal document, like I just posted to the listserv, is mainly an acknowledgement that you know that submitting your idea doesn't mean we don't have other projects in the works that might have similar ideas--i.e. you acknowledge we won't steal your ideas. Mainly this is just a formality required by our legal department.

Our contracts do approach industry standards, and things are getting better all the time as far as our competitiveness goes--though of course we're still very new and to be honest, can't compete with the kind of numbers EUOL has garnered from larger, more established imprints, of course. But we are competitive for new authors, I think, and I think you'll find it worth your while to submit.

So then I can submit a query and sample that I'm submitting elsewhere?  And should it be addressed to you?  I'm planning on sending these off today or tomorrow--sorry about the repeated question, I can't access the utahchildrenswriter page--if that was the listserv you were referring to (I just get the daily digests).  I want to be sure I do this right.

I knew there was a question I forgot to answer. Yes, address it to me. Yes, you can send me a query and 3-chapter sample that is being simultaneously submitted.

(I get the digests, too, but I've added it to my yahoo groups so that I can look at the messages individually online if necessary.)

Thanks for the quick reply--I'll leave in about an hour and a half to send it off.

Methinks I shall hijack this thread...

Stacer, my manager just interviewed this stellar candidate for the other perms assitant job: Amy Lee Bennett. Turns out she just graduated with double master's degree from Simmons. In fact, she majored in children's lit and creative writing. Pretty cool. I know you probably wouldn't know her since you've been out of Simmons for a while, but I thought it was an interesting bit of fact.

As for me, I am *so* happy to know that soon I won't be going it alone in my dept anymore. :D

Actually, I know Amy Lee quite well. (I only graduated a year ago.) She started about a semester before me, I think. She just stayed on for the MFA when I didn't, and I did take a semester off in the middle of my time at Simmons. She and I were the big fantasy buffs in the program while I was there.

She's really cool. Knows a LOT about fantasy and fairy tales. She and I took folklore together (in addition to pretty much most of our classes).

woot! That's very awesome. Two fantasy nerds at Allyn & Bacon. Yay! Funny how small a world it can be at times. Okay, well, Boston can be a small world I guess I should say. heh. Anyhow, it sounds like it would be great to get to know her.

/me shouts for joy.

Hurray! Bob said that he's offered the job to Amy Lee, not the other chick from Emerson whom I don't much care for. Looks like Amy Lee's going to accept, too! :D How cool.
