Poetry Group
« on: August 17, 2006, 02:04:55 PM »
Alright, I'm going to try this again and be less cynical about it.

I'd like to start some kind of poetry group where there is much discussion, collaborating, and writing of poetry among people around here. But not just here, friends of people are much obliged to join in on this.

Maybe twice a month during the week for a few hours would be good.

I talked to Fell, and he expressed some interest in the group (and poetry in general), and I am hoping to get some more people in on this.

So, now I ask, who is interested and when is best?

I like the title, you should make it the official and not just the working one.

You're right. It does have a j'neseque to it.

Anyways, I'd like to try and stay on topic as much as possible and leave current works out of this for now. (I'm allowed since this is the only thing I am not humble about at all.)

So.... yeah. Anyone. Anybody. Someone? Interested?

I am interested in a "the idea of this scares the freaking crap out of me because I've never had anyone critique my poetry before and I don't know that I'm actually any good at it" sort of a way.

But I'd be interested.  Were you thinking an IRC sort of thing?

And I think you should hit up Jeffe.  Because he's a good poet.  Jeffe, you looking at this?

Yes, I believe irc would be a good place to do this.

There is no right or wrong in poetry; there is also a major wrong in poetry. But these things will be pointed out by poets like myself, and possibly anyone else that joins.

Jeffe would be a cool bean to have around if he ever was around any more.

There's no reason to be scared of this. It's entirely awesome to write poetry, and I'd have to say it's the thinking man's fiction, in the sense that it makes you condense your words and be rthymic and flowery at times when you may be thinking "what in the world am I writing?"

But yes... I'll give this another week to build up any premise and then set a date for the first meeting. Anyone who shows up will rock, and those who don't will be labeled "Terd."

I assum you mean Je ne sais quoi (French for "I don't know").

I can't join, even if I were doing more than haiku currently, on the basis that you believe "there is no right or wrong in poetry." This is a fundamental philosophical disagreement I suppose we have that cannot be resolved.

SE, there are rules, as in all forms of writing; however, sometimes those rules will be broken to redefine convention.

So, as you can see, you may be right. Also, you may never actually be right. This is why I dislike critical theories, too much on the table of "maybes."

Anywho, next week the 7th of September, between the hours of 5 pm and 7 pm I will be on irc.esper.net in channel #PoetryGroup.

Be there, or be reformed.

yes, you should break rules in all writing

but there are still *right* and *wrong* times to break them.

it may sound pedantic, but I still can't take the use of the phrase "no right or wrong," even if you don't mean it as libertine as it sounds. Because, frankly, most people will take too much liberty and create some really horrid stuff. Better to prevent rather than correct.

Right = concrete images and phrases.

Wrong = abstractions and poorly written indecencies.
