The cost for a new cord depends on your laptop and where it sorted out.  Mine, for example, has two parts to it, the A/C adapter and then the plug which can be separated from the A/C adapter.  If the plug shorts out I can just remove it and go to any store and by a new one since it's a standardized size for about $7.  The A/C adapter is much more expensive and harder to find.

I'd check CompUSA, if anyone has a replacement (generic or name brand) it would be them.  If not you'd have to buy a new one on-line.  That would cost probably $30-$40.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

actually, a number of the replacements for adapters can run up to $80. If that's the case, you can go to ebay pretty quick.

Oo, really? I can just replace the cord? Oh, that would be a heavensend. Because that's where the short is, the cord part, not the big box of the AC adaptor.

is it a two parter? If so, then you certainly can. Just run to radio shack. Cost you $5.

I was wrong. It's the AC adaptor part. $80 at CompUSA for a Toshiba Satellite S-161 model. $80 that I don't have. Does it *have* to be the manufacturer's model, or can it be any cord rated for the power the computer needs?

I recommend the manufacturer one, but you can get new ones pretty cheap on ebay, usually. That's where I replaced my adapter. $30 as opposed to $80.

This comes at such a bad time. I'm trying to pick up extra work and pay off some bills and get EVEN for goodness' sake, and things just keep piling up. I'll try ebay and hope for the best. Meanwhile, no NaNo, and no freelancing (which was something I'm trying to get back into for the extra money).

I'm considering what of my stuff I can sell, really. Like, do I really need my TV? How much can I get for my guitar? I have a good job, I shouldn't be scrounging and having to choose between paying the rent and eating.

I'm grumpy because life got really busy for me at the end of October, and now I'm going to have to play catch-up with NaNoWriMo if I want to participate, and I haven't even hardly done any prewriting yet.

Okay, really, I just want to cry. Going home now, to no computer. Having no computer is far more frustrating than my problem of the last few months, having an unreliable internet connection. I could still work on my computer.

I know you guys were all holding your breath to hear about whether or not I died of bronchitus turned pneumonia turned tuberculosis, but you can all breathe easier now. I know I am.

I found a homeopathic doctor who gave me some remedies that *actually worked* without any strange side-effects. I know it's not for everyone, but I am definitely a fan of natural medicine.

So I am on the way to recovery and decidedly less grumpy.  :D

Actually, I only thought I had bronchitis. It turned out the prediction was correct. And it is true that bronchitis, if not properly treated, can move further into your lungs and turn into pneumonia.

It is not true, however, that bronchitis can turn into tuberculosis. MsFish and EUOL could tell you a funny story about that--they were in my writing class last Fall. I told my writing class I had tuberculosis and they freaked out--acted like I was dying. I felt very confused and went home and looked it up only to realize I had gotten tuberculosis mixed up with bronchitis. Whoops. Much to my chagrin, I had to return to the class and make the off-hand remark that I did not have tuberculosis--I had bronchitis.

EUOL used to tease me about that. I think that was the first time he realized I was . . . uh . . . special.  ::)

Bwaaahahaha! Yeah, I'll bet they freaked out. TB is a force to be reckoned with--and avoided. Sounds like you're well on your way to being good friends with Mrs. Malaprop! ;D
