Yes, award shows are stupid, and the Grammies are nearly the stupidest, but even so it's surprising how much jank is on this year's list.

The Rock Album category has three excellent choices (Matchbox 20 is also good, but not a contender here), and I doubt I could pick one over the other two, but other than that it's a pretty lame year.

Also, I kind of thought the Evanescence album was pretty so-so (some greast songs, and some pretty bland stuff).  On the other hand, I think that this is Matchbox 20's strongest album yet.

I've got to dissagree.  "Clocks" is on there for Record of the year, and that is a very cool song.  Also, I think the Evanescence CD is one of the best albums I own.  Elephant had some interesting, and unique, songs, and Emenem's single--while not his best--was far from 'jank.'

I agree with everyone's choices so far.  But you know the Grammies are one of the award shows that I only pay attention to when someone I like wins.

Hmm, actually that's all awards shows, though I'm tempted to watch The Commies this year just because of the name.

2) I don't like teen pop.

I think it's unfair to lable the grammies junk because one doesn't like the items they include from genres one doesn't particularly care for.  Looking at record and album of the year, the choices are fairly spread across the genres.  The ones they included from genres I like are very agreeable.  Honestly, considering the broad scope of the awards, the fact that they picked two records (out of five) and two albums (out of five) I consider excellent means that they are most certainly not being 'lame.'

And I didn't cover rock album, since you already had.  I also didn't mention rap/country/pop albums, since there aren't songs they really could have picked in those three that I would have liked.  I hardly think your 'several dozen' crack was legitimately grounded, since  I was obviously looking only at album/record.

humm looking at the Record of the year, I think all of those songs are exceptionaly good.  Has anyone here actualy listened to more then just Clocks?  "Where is the Love" is a great song, and should win.  "Hey-ya" is also very good.

I just have one question?  what's the difference between "Record of the year" and "Song of the year"?  If I'm not mistaken a record is just a single.

I think 'song' is the writing-credit award.  Best lyrics or something like that.

Especially when they include items from one genre and put them in the wrong one. U2 as heavy metal for example... Lets face it the grammies are the most mocked and derided awards show for a reason. Its been proven time and time again that they are out of touch with their industry.

To give something very concrete, Jethro Tull once won best Heavy Metal something or other. JT is decidedly not metal.

Last night, a friend was in here. She had the tv on and the Billboard Music Awards thing was on. I had no interest to watch it or for that matter to listen to it. All I know is that it was pretty dull, at least until Triumph the Insult Comic Dog appeared with some guy from the Foo FIghters. Then I watched intently. And that was about the only good part. So I then proceeded to crank up the 311 tunes.

To quote Fell's opening words on this thread, it's surprising how much jank is on this year's list.  He was referring to nominees, and I guess it's no surprise that jank nominees result in jank winners.

Two significant exceptions:  Evanescence won best new artist, and Johnny Cash won Best Video for "Hurt".  If you haven't seen it, it was really incredible.
