if you're going to design anything, you've got to choose a basis for building it around. By genre, group, theme, or some combination. Then get songs that sound good together.

I know the basics of playlist building, E.

I just don't know if I have many tracks condusive to sleep and I'd like artist suggestions.

sorry, missed the adjective.

I'd say that isn't something I can recommend though. I sleep to very different things than others do.

Well, there's TMBG's Bed, Bed, Bed. You can get the happy go lucky tune or the slow sad sleepy tune. And then there's "Sleepwalkers" and "Sleepybones and Lazyheads." Both TMBG songs. "Idlewild" by TMBG is a very sleepy song to I believe.

Can't think of any others right now.

I have to have relaxing instrumental music to fall asleep to. One I listened to for a long time was called "Miracles"--I can't remember the artist now, but his first name was Paul and I bought it at an LDS bookstore, so it would probably be listed in religious music. Then again, it was a tribute to the children lost in the Oklahoma City bombing, so maybe not.

I also had an instrumental CD of famous romantic movie songs, like the themes from The Man From Snowy River and Ice Castles and Somewhere in Time, etc. It turned out to be very relaxing.

One Handed

much of Sarah McLachlan's music
some Peter Gabriel

Some of these I only have one song by (I got them from compilation albums) and that's why only one is listed.  For others, the artist may not have soporific music in general, but the song in question is very good in this regard.

Anything with "!!" I think is particularly good, though most of these songs are excellent for me.  Some people don't sleep well with Electronic (Trance/Ambient/Triphop) music at all, for example.

finally remembering to do this: my two most recent CDs

The more upbeat one:

Fountains of Wayne: "Radiation Vibe"
The Pixies: "Here Comes Your Man" (live)
The Lightning Seeds: "Pure"
barenaked Ladies: "Another Postcard"
U2: "Always"
Fastball: "You're An Ocean"
Jimmy Eat World: "the Middle
Too Much Joy: "Pirate"
Great Big Sea: "Here Comes My Baby"
Ookla the Mok: "Super Powers"
Dressy Bessy: "Bubbles"
Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet: "Having an Average Weekend"
Shonen Knife: "Daydream Believer"
Sugarcult: "Stuck in America"
Toad the Wet Sprocket: "Hey Bulldog"
Silverjet: "Kid"
Young Fresh Fellows: "Three Sides to This Story"
Jimmy Eat World: "If You Don't Don't"
Buck O' Nine: "My Town"
U2: "Walk On"
Eels: "Packing Blankets"
The Cure: "Wrong Number"
The Smiths: "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before"

The more mellow one:

Jimmy Eat World: "Hear You Me"
The Sugarcult: "Lost In You:
Toad the Wet Sprocket: "Fly From Heaven
Big Head Todd and the Monsters: "Bittersweet"
Too Much Joy: "gramatan"
Metallica: "Nothing Else Matters"
Placebo: "Black-Eyed"
Staind: "It's Been A While"
Three Doors Down: "Be Like That"
The Black Crowes: "She Talks to Angels"
Our Lady Peace: "Life"
The Sugarcult: "How Does It Feel"
The Refreshments: "Birds Sing"
They Might Be Giants: "Pet Name"
Ookla the Mok: "Home"
Toad the Wet Sprocket: "Hobbit on the Rocks"
Our Lady Peace: "Clumsy"
U2: "Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" (acoustic)

yeah, there's a lot of band repetition in those two. Which is really odd for me. Usually it's one mix, one song per band. BUt between the two, there's three Toad, three Jimmy, three sugarcult, and three U2. Most of the other bands have a song on each. Weird. Must have been in the mood for those artists.
