Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys

Im a pirate at heart I think, and Im thrilled that they are popular again. I just re-watched all the old Errol Flynn movies a few weeks ago thrilled to hear the great old Korngold Soundtracks. Well yet again the movies havent let me down, or in this case a movie star and a director.
While filming Pirates of the Caribbean II Johnny Depp and Director Gore Verbinski had a cool idea.... do an multi artist album of Pirate music, but who could the get to do it... Well the record is on Tom Waits studio, Anti Records

hmmm People like Nick Cave, Gavin Friday, Andrea Corr from the Corr's, Sting, Bono, Robyn Hitchcock, Jolie Holland, Lucinda Williams like 47 sweet arrangements of Pirate songs... can you beat that? I thought not!

So why is this important to me? First of all this music has been around for hundreds of years, hundreds and its embedded in the blood of every person who's ever read Treasure island, or Peter Pan, or thought of warm sandy shores and looked for buried treasure. Its also historically important, these songs arent the sanitised version sung on folk albums in the 1960's. Some of them are rough, brash, lewd and funny. They show us what the singers were really like and help expose the harsh realities of Sea life. At the same time they are also charming. Anyhow, here's some links about it.
