Twilight book signing at BYU
« on: September 15, 2006, 10:57:07 AM »
This came on one of my email lists. Thought I'd post it here in case anyone was interested.

Quote
You are all invited to the BYU campus on Friday, September 15
2006, for a "Stephenie Meyer event." Stephenie will sign books in the
BYU Bookstore from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and then lecture in the Harold B. Lee
Library Auditorium (level 1) from approximately 3:45 p.m. Stephenie
graduated from BYU with a degree in English. She is the author of
Twilight and the just-released New Moon. She has also been invited to
participate in the 2006 National Book Festival. The Festival is
organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and First Lady Laura
Bush hosts the event which will take place Saturday, 30 September 2006
on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The following websites may be
of interest to you:

Twilight is a YA vampire book that has gotten a lot of hype. I haven't read it yet but I'm thinking of going and picking up a copy and getting it signed. I just found out recently that Stephenie Meyer is LDS, and I'm always interested in meeting LDS authors who have made it big in mainstream fiction.

Sigyn said he read and liked it (although it was a set up).

I saw an article about her in a recent Deseret News. Sounded interesting to me, too.

Tell me again why a teenage vampire book gets all this hype?  I mean, Laura Bush? Why?  LECTURES in the library... on what?

(I'm not being snarky.  I really want to know.)

The festival is a national thing. It's not about a vampire novel. She's one of over seventy creators. When you invite 70 creators to a festival every year, you invite those who are just getting attention.

Laura Bush is hosting because the festival is held by the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian, who are some pretty big players.

I enjoyed Twilight.  Now that I've had some time to think about it, I think I liked it even more than I initially thought.  I've looked over Stephenie Meyer's website, and she seems like a fun person.  I would like to go to her lecture, because I think she would actually have some interesting things to say.  Oh, and for those of you more in the Salt Lake area, she will also be doing a book signing tonight at King's English at 7 p.m. and tomorrow at Sam Weller's at 3 p.m. (I think).
If I had any clue, would I be here?

Stephenie Meyer's getting a lot of attention at BYU because she's getting a lot of attention nationwide from librarians, teachers, and teens. The vampire novel will never die, I think. She's a BYU alum and a Utah native (I *think*, on that last one. So you do a book tour. Being a YA author, she can talk about more than her books, though--she can talk about getting teens to read or any variety of teen issues, such as trusting beautiful strangers or whatever.

On Twilight, I have the ARC that I got from ALA a year ago, and I started it and it felt so incredibly slow that I put it down again. Yet it'd been getting all this hype on the teen library email list I'm on, and I'm not sure why. Finally in the last few months a few librarians are admitting they're not quite sure why everyone likes it so well--the main character, a girl, is awful passive when it comes to her relationship with the vampire.

If I ever finish it, I'll let you know. At this point, I have so many other books to read that it's at the bottom of the list.

Though I agree with Sigyn that from her website she sounds pretty cool. I've heard that her writing is tighter in the sequel.

Well, that explains the Laura Bush thing, I had the impression from reading the post that She was the focus or something, my mistake.

But, is she just getting all this press because it's a vampire novel?  Maybe I should write a vampire novel about a passive girl.

According to the Deseret News article Nessa linked she's now living in Arizona. So this really is a book tour--she's in town and hitting spots.

Even though I live in Salt Lake, I actually can't make any of those times (busy tonight, leaving tomorrow to go to California for 2 weeks). So, I'm going to try to go to Provo, since I was going down tonight for the Peter Breinholt concert anyway. I'll just have to go a little earlier now.

Do you think you'll go, Nessa? I've never met you in person.

Right. I meant that as a Utah native (if she is one) she's hitting a place that would have a good following for her. Even just being a Mormon, though, makes that possible in Utah.

Also: New Moon (the sequel to Twilight) is #1 on the PW Bestseller list for September children's novels. And Twilight is #11.

If I'm not mistake Laura Bush has some influence on who's invited to that and she tends to invite female writers.

She's also a Librarian so who else to host that then the most powerful librarian in the world?
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!
