Paycheck (now there are SPOILERS further down)
« on: December 22, 2003, 11:19:21 PM »
I have a major migraine, so I won't post too much about it tonight, but I wanted to say that I really liked it. Ben was a little flat, and Uma's hair was ridiculous, but the overall story was good, and there was a lot of good action. I really liked the way he was able to use everyday items to leave clues for himself, though sometimes I felt it might have been a little too neat.

Has anyone read the P.K. Dick story? Is it a full length book, or is it a short story?

It's a short story, and a very good one. There's only eight or nine objects, though, not seventeen or whatever it is in the movie. You'd really have to stretch to get that many clues that all make sense and aren't silly.

Okay, now there are spoilers:

I mean it...

SPOILER ALERT

The more I think about it, the less I liked Ben Affleck in this role. Uma Thurman was not great either. Ben was just so cool (not in a good way) about it all. When Tom Cruise's character in Minority Report figures out what's going on, there's some major emotion involved. Ben was emotionless the whole way through, as if it were everyday that he has to run for his life, be chased by bad men, etc. He couldn't remember Uma Thurman's character, and all he can say is I'm sorry, with a look on his face like he wasn't sorry at all, and all she can do is tear up a little. A little too understated. I would have liked her to rage at him--"I told you not to do this, go to the FBI, do something..." etc. and for him to have ... I don't know, done more. Maybe that's more writing than acting, but I think that scene flopped.

I did enjoy the motorcycle chase, though.

in all fairness, if he doesn't have a memory, than he might just assume that he DOES run for his life every day.
