Bush, who knew you were an environmentalist
« on: June 16, 2006, 09:59:53 PM »
So, yeah Im not ashamed to admit that my commander and chief and I don't see eye to eye on a lot. Still as a Coastie and someone who's seen the effects of ocean pollution, overfishing, and rogue drift nets I was somewhat stunned when our Pres created the worlds largest marine sanctuary the other day. And when I mean large I mean that its larger than 46 of the U.S. 50 states (not combined), and more than seven times larger than all the other 13 national marine sanctuaries combined. Words fail me.

He decided to do it after watching Jacque Cousteau's son's show on PBS (Ocean adventures).

The area of the pacific thats protected was destined to become a fishing wasteland, as its one of the more remote places on earth, Japanese and Chinese fisherman like to go there to drift net tons of fish... they can actually catch them there. Anyone whos ever done fishery patrol off of New England will know just how much damage drift nets have done in the space of two generations to thats areas fisheries.

So wow.

Mr. President, this non alcoholic beverage produced by Annheiser Busch is for you.

As a fish advocate, I applaud Pres. Bush's efforts to protect fish habitates. Incidentally, from a economic point of view, marine sanctuaries are a positive step toward economic stability.

Overfishing occurs because no individual fisherman has an incentive to stop overfishing and preserve fishing stocks. Oceans are the text-book example of the tragidy of the commons. This new marine sanctuary, by virtue of it massive size, should at least give some species a chance of rebounding from overfishing (assuming that global pollution, climate change, or natural disasters don't wipe them out).

Comparing a Tuna Roll to a Tuna sandwich is like comparing Spam to Prosciutto.

...Maybe that's just me.   :)

....does this mean that our nation is being run by a Frenchmen on public broadcasting?

Yes, but before I had a good friend introduce me to sushi I always associated "Tuna Roll" with "Tuna CassaROLE"  blechk.

Tuna Roll is a really stupid name for something so scrumptious.

I could go for a spicy tuna roll right now, (or scrummy tuna or whatever you what to call it). Too bad that my current budget prevents me from being able to afford such sophisticated food. Heck, my kinds eat so much that I had to go to Whole Foods and have free samples for dinner.  Fortunately, there was thia halibut for free. Yes, life isn't easy since I've been unemployed for almost a year.  :-/

on a related environmental note Whole Foods has gone to a 0% waste policy where food and trash are either recycled (trash) used as fertilizer/ mulch or donated to homeless shelters before it goes bad. Also they are the only buisness in the us purchasing 00% of its power from wind producers.

I'm told that the UK government was told it had two choices by it's energy industry experts: either we build more nuclear power plants, or we buy energy from the french, who use nuclear power plants to generate it. The promises made by wind farms, etc, just don't live up to the needs of the country.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

They should build some pebble-bed reactors.

Wind has started to take off in a big way here, because of huge open spaces and newer more efficent wind generating stations. You can even farm around Wind generators, a prospect not lost of american agribuisness.

Wind Farms are nothing but high tech bird slaughtering machines.

:)

No matter how hard you try to please everyone, someone is going to get mad.  Especially environmentalists.

Every nation that can, should use nuclear power, it is by far the best.

the altamont study in wind energy used seriously outdated wind generators,... with small vanes... and super high speed rotation on top of a steel lattice that made and excellent perch.  They also did little site research before putting in the farm and decided to place it in the middle of a major bird migration route. Result instant bird bologna.

Plenty of new studies have been done with new power generators that spin very slowly because of gears and large vanes... and the bird kill count has gone down to almost nil. Yes they did kill birds but now power lines kill more birds than the windmills.
