The Best of 80's Movies
« on: April 06, 2006, 01:02:47 AM »
I love the 80's and the good movies from that erra.  So I thought I'd start this thread by posting three that are at the top of my head.   ;)

Pump Up The Volume, Starring Christian Slater
Why?  Because this movie truly is the epitome of how many people think of life even today.  Not always, but at least some point in their life people seem to think to themselves, "God is this all there is?  Am I really this uninspired?  Well so be it!"

The Breakfast Club:  An obvious choice.  Brings everyone back to High School even though it was written in the 80's.  I love this movie!

Best of the Best:  Starring Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, and Sally Kirkland.  About five men who are selected as members of the U.S. National Karate Team, and are destined to compete with the best of Korea's champions.  Don't cry at the end!

My husband groups Pump Up the Volume and Breakfast Club with Heathers as the classic 80's  "High School" films.  It makes an awesome trio IMHO.  We own two of the three so far, but not Breakast Club - hey it's on cable most of the time anyway.

Ummmm .... Back to the Future?

Now I'll wait around to see what E has to say.

We used to watch Best of the Best every year at the sleepover I had with my cousins.  I haven't watched it in years for fear of being disappointed with it now.  I remember liking it a ton back then.

I know this doesn't qualify as the "best" of the 80s, but when I was a kid, I loved to watch Girls Just Want to Have Fun with Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker. That was a fun movie.

I think my tops of the list will be predictable. Some Kind of Wonderful and anything *anything* starring Molly Ringwald. Esp. Pretty in Pink (I really don't *care* that you don't like the dress she makes for hte prom -- which is the complaint I hear about it most often).

Breakfast Club, naturally, is way up there. It's hard to say anything bad about Goonies or Better Off Dead either.

But, let us not forget that Empire Strikes Back and Superman II are 80s movies (as well as all three Indiana Jones movies). I have to give them props, but I assume we're talking about movies that were not only *made* in the 80s, but epitomize it.

I also have to give a nod to Heathers -- classic. Back when Wynona was still cute in her teen goth sort of way. Just to round out the list, be sure to see Sixteen Candles as well (yes, another Molly movies).

There were plenty of movies that were goofy in an 80s way that I'd still watch: movies like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun or Adventures in Babysitting. But I can't bring myself to say they're "Best."

The Last Dragon -- Bruce Leroy vs. Sho Nuff.  It's a black, kung-fu, dance music movie.
If I had any clue, would I be here?

I know they've arlready been mentioned, but the two trilogies, Back to the Future and Indiana Jones, are big, big favorites.

Here's another great 80s flick: Neverending Story. It came to theaters in 1984, I think.
Lord Ruler and Lady Protractor were off on vacation, thus the angles running amok.

Wow I think I own all of these movies also.  At least they aren't all on dvd.  Best 80s movies would get filled up too fast with the obvious stuff; Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Supes 2, etc.. that's almost 10 right there.  Add in Goonies or a Rambo or Terminator or Conan.  Maybe Karate Kid.  Anyway you see my point, there are too many movies from the 80s.  Even a lot of good ones, which is probalby why I am addicted to movies now.

Really? Wow... I rest sole and total blame of the creation of Minivan's, Chickflicks and the Holocaust on the shoulders of Drew Barrymore and Molly Ringwald.

To every person their own.

80's movies? Most have been Named:

Star Wars, Indiana Jones.

Back to the Future is good.

What about Never Ending Story? I loved it as a kid.

That and that Hobbit cartoon, or was it 70's? I don't remember, too lazy to look it up too.
Delicious! Like a tall cool glass of Nestle' Quik mixed in Orange Juice!
