Walk to Rivendell

http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchallenge/Walk/walk.html

Ok its getting on Fall and soon we will all be trapped indoors, so I offer this challenge to you. Try walking to Rivendell, the Milage anyway...

Walk, run, hike, bike, blade, swim - if you can measure the distance, you can do this challenge.  Keep a log, and record your daily or weekly miles and the type of exercise. For walkers and hikers, you might want to invest in a walking meter, they look like wristwatches.  Otherwise, you can estimate your distance at 1 mile for every 20 minutes of brisk walking on a flat surface. Our original suggested deadline was the opening of The Return of the King, December 17, 2003. As this glorious day is now past, we are setting new goals, new times:

If you would like to set a long term distance goal, choose any one of the following:

THE LORD OF THE RINGS:

458 miles: Go from Hobbiton to Rivendell.

462 miles: Set out with the Fellowship from Rivendell to Lothlorien.

389 miles: Travel through Moria and down the Anduin from Lothlorien to Rauros Falls.

355 miles: Follow the path of Merry and Pippin from Rauros to Isengard.

484 miles: Follow the path of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli from Rauros to Isengard.

470 miles: Follow Frodo and Sam on the quest from Rauros to Mt. Doom.

517 miles: Ride with Gandalf and Pippin from Isengard to Minas Tirith.

786 miles: Travel with Aragorn from Isengard to Dunharrow through the Paths of the Dead to Minas Tirith.

578 miles: Ride with Merry and the Rohirrim from Isengard to Dunharrow to Edoras to Minas Tirith.

138 miles: Follow Aragorn from Minas Tirith to the Morannon.

120 miles: Return for Aragorn’s crowning from the Morannon to Minas Tirith.

1625 miles: Take the road home with the hobbits from Minas Tirith to Hobbiton.

Even cooler you can keep track of your trip here... or at least see if you could have kept up with Sam and Frodo...

So have at you Twiggers... its your exercise challange for the rest of the year.

...400+ miles? Are you insane? I understand the hobbits/Tolkien were, but honestly, walking/running/footing off that far? I might as well just back a bag and come visit you you overzealous monkey. =P

How about if I track my driving mileage? 'Cause then I might be able to get that kind of distance in before the end of the year.

well, to be fair, a lot of the distances stated were made riding, not walking .  And the hobbits spent all day walking everyday...if I had that kinda of time, I could keep up with them surely--for their legs and short and their feet are big, whereas my legs are long and my feet are adequately proportioned!

yeah, and some of those distances aren't fair. Ride with Gandalf and Pippen to Minas Tirith? I mean, they were riding a magical (essentially) horse!

Hey Frodo and Sam hoofed it pretty much the whole way. But Riding a horse is good exercise, so if y'all really want to ride you can.

If I find a place other than a treadmill to run, where I know the distance, then I will take a swing at one of these. I don't know which one yet, it really depends on how long it takes me to find a place to run. However, some of these really aren't that hard if you stay consistent.

I walk two miles every weekday, so by the end of the year I'll have gone 520 miles. Does that count towards my total?

List printed and I am about 4miles into the trip to Rivendel
Actualy I used the chart from the linked site
http://shieldmaidens.net/mileagedatabase/index.php
I think I will start with a trip to the Lonely Mountian

I promised my Wife that I would get in shape and build my endurance as proof that I quit smoking.. Now I have a format.

My journey through Middle Earth may be an odd one.. I intend to include Swimming distance (Gollum's Path) and Bike Milage (To be credited toward milage taken on horseback)
