Aurora Science ficton RPG

http://www.auroragames.com/index.html

Firstly Fell I really want to try the full version of this so if you can reach em and they want to play send the stuff to me!! :)

Why this game looks cool

1. Its peer reviewed by real world scientists and engineers who have fleshed out a cool future universe thats follows all the rules of our own.

The Game designer has a PHD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophsics from UPenn Right now this guy works in Cambridge Mass (MIT anyone).  The contributors to this book include 9 Doctors (of the PHD variety) plus all sorts of other experts.

Plus they offer a free starter kit.

All in all it reminds me of the tone of Traveller with more science and realism...

Whats it about? What can you do in it? I'm too lazy to follow the link (thats why im here after all).

And i dont regard super crunchy sci fi as necessarilly good - the mars series by kim stanly robinson had very weak characters and simply became boring by halfway through book 2. I much prefer more abstract RPG systems, like the ST system, rather than messing around checking if you are breaking one of a trillion rules.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

The full version is about 250 pages...............................................................................But you should definately check on the link.... it seems simple enough to play and as for the science,
well 90% of the game is scientific, but since there still has to be a way to push past the light barrier some of it is not. The point seems to be that before FTL travel was proven the Races of the universe expanded slowly over decades and centuries.  Eventually the races began to understand that each star had 2 jump points (one at the north pole and one at the south) Expansion was explosive untill a phenominon know as the hammer (a strange reaction to Jumps that causes psychological trauma) happened. Trade broke down, worlds died and Empires fell. Then some people were found to be immune to the Hammer. You are immune... you have a universe to explore (or whatever)

The mechanics are interesting and involve a system that has characters roll only for failure.

I don't understand what you said about the mechanics, could you write a full review or explain that better?

And what's with all the white space there?

Push Dice- the Aurora mechanic

If your skill is higher than the difficulty target you do not have to roll.

If it isn't you have to "push" yourself to a higher standard. You can Push a skill by as many points you have in it (Doubling your skill) You automatically add the points your adding to your skill total. The catch is for every die you put in you have to roll a d10. If you don't make the roll on the D10 you have to subtract 2 from your skill total. So if you push everything and fail everything you have a disaster. If you get more successes than the target you succeed.
