Tekumel
« on: October 05, 2003, 07:09:12 PM »
Heres one game nut who's wondering if Guardians of Order can actually get Tekumel out this christmas.

I've been excited for about two years (ever since the product was announced) but feel like the book will never be finished.

Tekumel, for those of you who dont know, is a game world developed by M.A.R. Barker a professor who taught linguistics and South Asian Studies at the University of Minnesota. The world he created is a dynamic and interesting alternative to the European cultures of D&D.

The Five Empires (one of which is the titular Empire of the Petal Throne, Tsolyánu) have technology about on the level of the European Renaissance (aqueducts, good roads, simple mechanics, wheeled carts, siege engines, crude surgery and slightly more advanced pharmacology, crossbows, water clocks, etc.). Their governments are greatly hidebound and bureaucratic, like those of ancient China. They have mighty, well-organized legions like those of the Romans. Their gods are like those of the Hindus, with a heavy dose of the bloodthirsty Aztec or Mayan deities. Their legal codes and sciences are much like those of the Arab philosophers of the Middle Ages; they are obsessed with personal and family honor, much like the medieval Japanese. The societies presented with the game are very intricate and very old (the youngest governments are some 2,500 years developed, and they have histories, traditions, and myths stretching back some 25,000 years).

The game has a long lineage and spans many systems, so why am I excited about GOO publishing it?

Because the new Tekumel will use their Big Eyes Small Mouth System!

And really its a test of wether BESM can be used for an intricate and serious game with a massive pedigree.

So they simply string together a bunch of traits and call it a innovation.

Who do you mean by they? Guardians?

If you mean Barker then yes, except Tekumel is way more complex than that. The empires in the story are very developed and while they tend to resemble Asian cultures they are very much their own world.

And before you knock BESM you should probably give it a look see. Its a nice system.

Actually, there WAS a Tekumel rpg out back in the early to mid 80's.  The rules were known for being very complex, yet the game had a staunch following.  Like most of the early rpg's however, Tekumel died off when TSR announced their radical update of D&D to 2nd edition in 1985.

yeah, sounds like he simply wan't impressed with your description of the setting. I didn't see any system bashing.
As is usual for me, I'm not terribly excited about a new setting for any system.

I couldn't tell what he was knocking especially since he use the Term They and Tekumel was invented and mostly written by one person M.A.R. Barker. I was asking him to clarify what he meant.

because it seems the two of you can't post anything without pissing the other off. It seems to me you were both pretty clear but neither of you understood.

Gather 'round, my children, and I shall tell you a tale about a little thing I like to call 'hyperbole.' You may have heard about him. Sometimes he goes by the name 'exaggeration.'

Yes, I know you post without fighting. But it's so frequent.
