Best place to buy a game online
« on: June 27, 2004, 06:35:37 PM »
So I think I like Settlers well enough to buy it. In fact, I want to buy it this week because I got a raise and promotion at work, and to celebrate, I'm inviting a few friends over to play Settlers. So, what would be the best place to get it? Through a link on amazon, I found Newspiel.com had it for $26, which is the cheapest I've seen so far. I'm wary of buying online from a site I'm unfamiliar with, though, but I don't want to spend 2 hours on public transportation to go find the game, so I figure what I would pay in higher retail prices, I'll just pay in shipping instead.

Any recommendations?

Amazon is good, especialy since you can get next day shipping form them where you are (heck you can even get sameday too).
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

Well, I ended up buying it from a game shop that happened to be on my bike ride home. Incidentally, it's just around the corner from the Hynes Convention Center, where WorldCon will be--not that you'll need to leave the con, I imagine, to get your fill of that kind of stuff.

Amazon had it for $35, compared to the $38 I paid, but with 2-day shipping it was going to be almost $50. The other sites that had it cheaper didn't have quick shipping, and I didn't want to wait for it because we're having a party Friday night.

So, because I had it in hand, after FHE one of my friends that loves it so much wanted to play. So we did. And lo, it was good.

I have to say, this is a good game to have on hand. Nobody ever wants to play the other games I have (Clue, Scrabble, Monopoly), but this one they like.

You should check out Carcasonne. It's by the same guy (good old Klaus), and similar in some ways, but wildly different in others. I think I like it even more than Settlers.

(ok bit of necro-posting)

Hey Stacy! Was that the Compleat Strategist you went to? I've been going there since I could drive, back in the days before large book chains carried gaming stuff and comic specialty shops.
There's also http://www.yourmovegames.com/ in Somerville which is very T friendly.

For online buying I've used http://www.gamersattic.com/ they have decent prices.
