Spotlight?
« on: February 18, 2004, 07:18:55 PM »
I think somehow we need to change how we display articles. You see, our main fare is, of course, reviews, which are interesting, and should be shown on the front page when new. That said, though, anyone who wnats to read a particular review can easily search for it and find it.

Now, we also have non-review artcles. Stuff like the Gaming Chef series, or my free Butcher! game( or modern ninja artcle) or that fantastic one a while back about roleplaying being a mythological experience. Now, these sorts of articles appear for a day, then disappear into the archive. The problem is, this is our unique content, and so no-one knows it's there unless there go looking for random stuff in that section.  Therefore, I think we need some way to showcase or spotlight this sort of article. Kind of like how Criticl Miss puts their review son one page, and their articles on the main page type thing.  (although we are far more review based than them).

No, I don't have a solution, I'm just suggesting we should do something like this.

Well, it seems like on the right, where the poll used to be (and just moving the poll down when it comes back) we could have a list fo the five most recent non-review articles. If this were popular. They're already distinguished in the db as different from reviews, so shouldn't be too hard, I'd think.

That is, if we all agree with you. Which is to say, I kind of do. But if we don't get enough articles for that list to change very often, it might get weird. I have a couple things I'll be submitting. And hopefully by Friday we'll have the next TW(i)G setting piece (written by Kije, with only very light editing by yours truly) up. Kije has done a good job, and it looks like he's almost done with a second of these as well. That's stuff worth listing as an article.

Yeah. Maybe making Articles its own section, instead of throwing them into the rpg etc sections would do that.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

well, I like them being categorized by sections. But if they could be dual listed as a non-review/original content, that would be cool. Of course, I'm just giving my thoughts on it.

they are seperate on the deparment page, you goto the articles section via the sort page.  As for doing what JP mentioned, that would mostly require a site change which getting Tage to do wont be easy.  The best thing I can think of off the top of my head would to each day have the site randomly choose a non review from the database and display that.  But again we'd have to get Tage to code it, which probaly aint going to happen.

But to say do, is to do the act of saying. If you're to lazy to do do, you should also be too lazy to do say.

The conversation above is a good example of why I'll never fear anything from any of you.
