City of Heroes
« on: April 13, 2004, 10:48:15 PM »
Releasing later this month is a MMORPG based on superheroes. I haven't much about it, other than praise for the versatility of the character designer. You have to be impressed by any game that let's you create this kind of diversity: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/cityofheroes/screens.html?page=96

I'm not sure how i feel about that. really, the screen shots look kind of neat. And I like the superhero idea... but I don't know if I believe it'll be different than EQ with superpowers instead of magic.

I think it will probably just be another EQ-style game, actually--instead of wandering around killing endless streams of Weak Skeletons, you'll beat up endless streams of Weak Thugs. The idea that you can get quests over cellphone instead of in person is kind of cool, but other than that it doesn't sound like they're trying to break any new ground in terms of game design--just in game presentation.

In case anyone else is playing this, i'm playing on Pinnacle server. Look for Entanaught.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Tell us about your character, and about the game. I'm very tempted to get this, but I don't know....

I'll be the one doing the review TFO :P

In short:

The game plays like what Diablo would play like if it was a MMORPG. No crafting, no messing about, just combat and missions. It's grouping and guilding systems are good (you can have a secondary Superhero group colour scheme that everyone changes into when going on a grouped mission, which is nice). There are 5 classes - melee defence, melee damage, ranged, wizard and cleric. At start you choose 2 power sets - i, for example, chose Tanker with Super strength and invulnerability (Ie, Hulk). You also choose your origin (Science, Magic, Natural, Mutation, Technology) which mainly affects what enemies you fight the most. At levels 6, 8, 10 and 12 you can chose an addition power set (i chose Teleportation at 6). You can get up to 6 power sets in total, which include stuff like Fire damage, stone skin, flight, jumping, medecine, etc. Each set has 4 (for after-creation sets like medecine, flight and teleport) to 8/10 for during-creation sets (any armour or damage dealing, which cannot be chosen after creation).

The city itself is really nice - it feels real. Though the mobs (muggers etc) are wierd - the crime rate in this place is closer to civil war than anything else.
