Fun and Cool References in WoW
« on: December 22, 2004, 03:16:48 AM »
So I'm in Darkshore with my 16th level NE Warrior and having a blast.   And tonight, a little touch put in by the guys at Blizz made it all the better.

You get a quest from Onu that has you investigate The Master's Glaive... a deep depression with a moat and a big skull with a gigantic sword stuck through it.  There's a ton of bad guys around.

Once you defeat them you approach their altar where you're supposed to find something that can give info about their plans.  There are two books.

One book gives you the info needed.

If you open the other book, an arm pops out and swats you quite aways back.  Errr....wrong book.

Very nice, subtle, Army of Darkness reference.

Have any of you come across anything similar?

There are tons and tons of these, back in CB I posted a link that was about 30 pages long filled with them, though some have been changed slightly becaue people complained that they violated the TOS and nameing policy.  Yep, after Blizz started enforceing their nameing policy all the Beta testers raised a stink and called Blizz Hipocrites.

My favorite one is the zelda quests or mario quests.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

What's the nameing policy, have a link to it or anything like that?

Would "Eru" be considered Religious or Trademarked?

No, since it's only when it comes to realy well known names.  But you probaly don't have much luck getting that name unless you hop onto a new server.

I have had decent luck with Tolkien names, As long as I stay away from main charachters,  The Sil and the Appendecies of ROTK Are a great source, I tend to use Rohirim for my Humans, Hobbits for Gnomes, Durin's Line for Dwarves (Though Names from Durin's Line are almost used up) and Eldar for Dark-Elves...  (though I may change that if they introduce High-Elves back into the game)
So far I have grabbed Elwig, Eorl, Oin, Boffur and Thingol.

I also had an Undead Rogue named "Badash"  But thats a diffrent line..

Obviously my plan to have a Druid named Beorn..... failed

When I played the beta there was one guy who named himself Hurin. He said it was several levels before he remembered Hurin was a man, not a dwarf.

And I never use LoTR rings, I use a random generator and choose whatever sounds nice. :)
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

I like to use Tolkien, especialy more obscure Tolkien refrences, as it tends to spark conversation with other Tolkien nerds...

Just avoid common Tolkien names like "Frodo" as it will just attract Movie fans... Bad if you are a book-snob
