The trouble with Word Sense...
« on: January 08, 2004, 01:52:09 PM »
So i have this big problem with the Word Sense thread. My mind works in images - i think of things by how they look. So when i read a word in that thread - say Needle - i actually think of a needle. I picture it. Not another word. So rather than doing the whole "first word into your mind" angle, i have to either plump for how i feel about that image, or translate the image into a different word. For needle, i pictured an actual needle, being held by a white gloved hand. The needle is sharp, pointy, etc. So i chose the word sharp as a substitute for the image. For Sewing machine, i pictured one of the sewing machines by the window in Mrs Lingards Textile class. I also pictured using said machine on fabric. Hence my choice of the word fabric. I could also have equally gone for boring since i thought the textiles class was boring, or maybe difficult since i had this great problem with the machines. They didn't do as i ordered them, damnit!

Anyone else have this, or am I a casualty of this so-called "MTV generation"?

I think the best thing to do is just give up your Word Sense addiction.

you're a casualty of much more than that.

Do you feel bad about this?

Ent, you are thinking of lots of words when you see needle: "a white gloved hand holding a needle". If that's the image I got, I might post "doctor", "mad scientist", "scary", "glove", "hand".

And it's not like there are any Word Sense police (or ninjas) so you're probably fine taking a minute to revolve through your images to find an appropriate word.

Nope.

But if you're that worried, then don't cheat, because you're own paranoia may be what gets you in the end.

You should be able to figure that out for yourself.

You did.

All I said was there weren't any Word Sense police or ninjas. I was assuming that your ninjas have more important things to do.

Such an attitude will only contribute to Entropy's paranoia.

I'm not paranoid, I just... like to be prepared for all eventualities.
