So i have this big problem with the Word Sense thread. My mind works in images - i think of things by how they look. So when i read a word in that thread - say Needle - i actually think of a needle. I picture it. Not another word. So rather than doing the whole "first word into your mind" angle, i have to either plump for how i feel about that image, or translate the image into a different word. For needle, i pictured an actual needle, being held by a white gloved hand. The needle is sharp, pointy, etc. So i chose the word sharp as a substitute for the image. For Sewing machine, i pictured one of the sewing machines by the window in Mrs Lingards Textile class. I also pictured using said machine on fabric. Hence my choice of the word fabric. I could also have equally gone for boring since i thought the textiles class was boring, or maybe difficult since i had this great problem with the machines. They didn't do as i ordered them, damnit!
Anyone else have this, or am I a casualty of this so-called "MTV generation"?
