Mine is from high school. I was on the dance team, and we had decided that our shirts for dance camp would have our nicknames on the back. But I had never had a nickname in my life besides Stace. I was dating a guy named Tim at the time, who everyone always called Timmer. So someone said, "How about Stimmer?" which I thought was really bad, and then another person suggested Stacer. It's been my nickname ever since, sometimes lengthened to Stacer Eraser (because it rhymes).

I also use norroway from time to time, which is from the story I've been working on for years called the Black Bull of Norroway.

I do actually think it's about time for me to get a new one, because Stacer has such connections to an exboyfriend, but I'm not really that good at coming up with them.

any animals or characters or THINGS you like particularly?

My first reaction is just to go with "Norroway" since that has meaning for you.

mine is a nerdy D&D reference. When AORP was still in its infancy 42's priest character invoked a lot of saints made up on the spot. Most were cultural references.

My favorite was Kashmir the patron saint of road construction.

Fuzzyoctopus is a nick I've been using since I started high school.  It's kind of a boring story, but my friends and I took to spending the second half of our lunch period drawing on our  lunch bags and amusing each other with them.  One day I was practicing my lettering, and turning each letter into a word.  'F' became fuzzy and it was right above 'O' which became octopus.  At which point someone looked over my shoulder and asked me what a fuzzy octopus was.

So about that time I started hanging out with my friends in IRC chatrooms, and it could sometimes be problematic finding a good nick that wasn't taken.  Fuzzyoctopus is never taken, unless it's taken by me.

Now I just kind of use it for everything, because I've gotten so used to it as a nick.

I always wondered about that name, Fuzzy.  Why were you writing 'O' after 'F'?  Last I checked, there were a few letters in-between....

(Oh, and check the writer's group section.  There's a thread there that I'd like your input on.)

Mine's a little convoluted. Maleficent is my favorite villian. Hence, my original name was Mistress of Evil (I wasn't the Mistress of All Evil because I thought it was too pretentious).

Then I started to date my husband, who sometimes goes as Darkness (I think this comes from WC3--"pick up the phone Darkness") when chatting, so I decided to be the Mistress of Darkness.

In an effort to shorten my name to something typable, someone refered to me as "Darkie", and I've always been kind of sad that didn't stick.

I wasn't doing it alphabetically, just all over the place.

True. And I suppose the fact that I'm bleach white wouldn't solve that problem.

Mine has kind of a convoluted history.

I was reading a book when I was eight or nine (as always), and one of the children in the book was named Brenna.  I thought it was a gorgeous name, and it was the name I used to play make-believe for years.  Then I named my character in AORP Brenna L'Arpista, and Brenna was shorter.

Lol.

Uhm, my first online nick name was 'Charlie82'. This was generated when trying to register for Red Alerts online play system. Charlie was taken. I was born in 1985, so i tried Charlie85. Also taken. So i tried Charlie82 - not taken. It sounded better as well.

Then, about... oh, over a year ago now, i decided i needed a new nick. Can't remember why. And i think i came across the word 'Entropy' around that time. I liked how it was normally used, it sounds nice, and i was slightly depressed at the time so that meaning fitted. Its real meaning (law of thermodynamics: the amount of change within a fixed system, and Maximum RANDOMNESS with minimum EFFORT) deeply pleases me :)
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)
