Hey, that's not a bad idea.  Except that then I'd want to eat him.  And I'd be afraid he would slither out of his vase and disappear.

I'd be more worried that he'd slither away. I know *I* wouldn't want to eat an amorphous blue blob...I mean, a betta fish. ;)

I name everything after literary characters or authors. My laptop was Miguel, for example. I have a dozen things named after comic book characters.

You could name him Curry (after Arthur Curry/Aquaman)

I've always had trouble coming up with good names for pets. Perhaps this is why it never occurred to me while growing up to name my stuffed animals, and I've never really named plants or cars, either.

I used to name my cats after composers--one of my favorites was Chopin. The rabbits kind of got named after their colors (Snowfoot, Butterscotch), and the horses often got names based on a combination of sire and dam--so Boomerang + Charmin' Cherry = Cherryboom, who we called Boomer. Bullet got his name because he was a silver Arabian (silver bullet).

The best name of a pet we ever had was a name we couldn't come up with ourselves. My pony, Ginger, had a colt, and I think we went a week trying to figure out what to call him. We live on a highway, so a new colt always attracted people to stop by, wanting to play with him. This woman stopped with her daughter and wanted to call him over to them, and asked what his name was. We said we hadn't thought of one yet.

So she called out, "George! C'mere, George!" and he came to her. It stuck.

That's a cool story.  Maybe I should try calling the fish and see what name it comes to.

At this point I'm leaning toward Hadrian.  Is that pronounced Hay-dri-an as in Make or Ha-dri-an as in Apple.

I'm looking at that and it makes no sense to me.  And I wrote it.  That's a bad sign.

What I'm trying to say is, long A sound or short A sound in the first syllable?

Now that I think about it I could probably just look it up somewhere, but I'm lazy.

Then it occurs to me that maybe it's pronounced some other way, which means it must be late and my brain has stopped working.  So I'm going to quite while I'm behind...here.

I've usually heard it pronounced Hay-dri-an.

Both. And the wall is quite close to where I live.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

I've only ever heard Americans pronounce it Hay-dri-an. And Americans are always right.

Dagon. I like that one.
Reminds me of one of my professors who refered to everyone who doesn't hold a degree in fine art as "ignorant philistines."
