WotC hiring Associate Editor for teen series
« on: March 12, 2005, 12:40:24 AM »
It's probably too early for me to be applying for actual job openings, so I figured I'd point this out to all of you just in case. I'll still send my application, but I doubt they'll be willing to wait a month and a half to two months before I'd be able to start.

Actually, looking at the end date, the actual job may not start until May.

Hmmm. Yeah, if they're unposting it April 1, they may be willing to hire for May. I didn't see that.

New York is still a better option for the numbers of higher-quality publishers, but Seattle'd be a nice place to live, so I hear. And cheaper than New York. It's worth applying for, just to see, though I'd rather work for a company like HarperCollins or Penguin Putnam (the latter of which, I just heard, cut 40 employees because of financial difficulties).

It fired them or it lascerated them? :s
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Was she at Penguin? I'm not sure who was affected, but it seemed to be across the board, not just the editors with the least experience. I'm pretty sure, though I'm not positive, that the 40 number also includes non-editorial, though, so it's not quite as bad as it sounds.

Well, I applied. We'll see what happens. I'm really feeling the pull toward New York, but I also need to apply for anything that seems like a viable option.

Cool thing about the New York possibility, though, is that a friend who is getting married in August has promised me her very cheap (for New York standards) one-bedroom apartment. Since I'll be "graduating" (term in quotes because it's not a real graduation, but rather a forced exile) to a family ward in August, it really doesn't matter where I live, so I can go for cheap, rather than where the singles ward is. (NY singles wards are strict about the 31 age limit.) And the family ward is actually right across the street. Jaime says it's a great ward and a nice neighborhood with a park right down the street, so between that and a fairly good commute to midtown, it'd be a good option. I'd just find a sublet till it was available, and sublets are the easiest thing to find in the NY wards, apparently.

How long has WotC been owned by Hasbro?

September of 1999, according to Google.

Though I didn't know until J.T. mentioned it to me last July, during a  long conversation discourse about the history of gaming.

Well, I do remember discussion here or at TLE when the WotC store closed, something about change in ownership or something. But I really didn't pay attention, and didn't realize it was the toy company. Seems to make sense, I suppose.

Yes, Hasbro has had a busy half-decade or so. Acquiring Milton Bradley, Avalon Hill, and Wizards of the Coast, they're kind of the kings of gaming.

Ok, I'm not sure about the MB thing, but they did at least acquire the best lisences MB had to offer.

So here's something. Not New York, but WotC called me back. My roommate emailed me about it, so I think it's for an interview, but I won't know till I call them back tomorrow. Anybody know anything about Seattle? I should ask my home teacher. He's from that area.
