Does anyone understand Linux? A cry for help
« on: July 13, 2005, 06:34:07 PM »
My dad just got a new Linux machine (for very cheap). Since he has a dial-up internet connection, I said that I would help him find a music player for Linux that plays mp3, but it seems that all Linux programs require you to compile them. I just need some help making sure that I download all of the right files.

Ha, what on earth kind of linux are you using, bare-bones Debian? Every normal distro I've seen already comes with some kind of music player, usually including mp3. (Although mp3 is proprietary, so some don't.) Anyway, what linux is it?

If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

may i suggest he wipe the disk clean and install windows? if he doesn't know how to compile, he shouldn't be using Linux.

I don't think you need to know how to use "make" and other compilers to use linux anymore. In fact, there are several *very* user-friendly distros out in the world now, including Fedora Core and my personal recommendation, Xandros Home.

But no, linux doesn't play .wma files, those are proprietary to Windows specifically.

EDIT: also, I never played FFXI, but I think the propoganda poster is pretty funny.

He knows how to compile . . . I just want to make sure that I download all of the files he needs. And yes, windows is an option.
